2013-2014 Dunlop Men’s College Squash Team Rankings (11/10/2013)

A shakeup occurred between ranking positions 30 – 40.  Virginia defeated Denison, and MIT defeated both Boston College and Boston University.

In addition, several new teams entered the rankings: Penn State (49); Richmond (54), Chicago (55), Illinois Champaign (56), Duke (60), and Vermont (63).

Team are reminded that to qualify for the National Team Championships, they must meet minimum match requirements:

  • Varsity teams are required to play ten (10) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least 6 different opponents. Varsity teams should play the majority of their matches against other varsity schools.
  • Club teams are required to play eight (8) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships in a 9 player division. In addition, club teams must play at least four (4) matches between January 1st and February 10th. At minimum, each team should have at least five (5) different opponents.

For a regular season match to officially count for ranking purposes, each team must have at least seven players. Except for Emerging Teams, matches with less than seven players per team will not count towards the required number of matches for entry into the National Team Championships.

Three new teams enter the rankings after playing matches: Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Notre Dame. These teams took ranking positions 38 through 40. The rest of the rankings remain unchanged from the preseason rankings.

Team are reminded that to qualify for the National Team Championships, they must meet minimum match requirements:

  • Varsity teams are required to play ten (10) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least 6 different opponents. Varsity teams should play the majority of their matches against other varsity schools.
  • Club teams are required to play eight (8) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships in a 9 player division. In addition, club teams must play at least four (4) matches between January 1st and February 10th. At minimum, each team should have at least five (5) different opponents.

Harrow Sports College Squash Player of the Week (11/10/2013)

Northampton, MA — For the week ending 11/10/2013, Haverford’s Caroline Nightingale and Johns Hopkins’ Harrison Finkelstein have been named the women’s and men’s [hpow].

A [hpow] should have a significant impact on his or her team’s performance during the prior week and demonstrate sportsmanship. Coaches and Sports Information Directors may nominate players.

Caroline Nightingale (Haverford): Over the weekend,  Haverford visited New York University. With the match deadlocked at 4-4, Nightingale, Haverford’s #1, faced NYU’s Michelle Yhantovsky. Six of the first eight team matches took four or more games to complete. Nightingale cemented the victory with a 3-0 victory (11-5, 11-0, and 11-3), which allowed the Fords to leave the Empire State with a 5-4 victory.

Harrison Finkelstein (Johns Hopkins): With the match between Johns Hopkins and Virginia tied at 4-4, freshman Finkelstein stepped on court against Virginia’s top player, Ned Whelan. The two battled for over an hour before Finkelstein pulled away to win in five games (10-12, 11-4, 12-10, 9-11, and 11-7). Johns Hopkins won the crucial early season match 5-4.

A few reminders…

  • Team Rankings: Rankings will be reviewed on Monday evening. If your results are not posted to the US Squash Scoring System, they will not be considered for ranking purposes. Without results in the US Squash Scoring System, your team will not be credited appropriately. At most, you have 48 hours after a match is played to submit results. In addition, the sooner results are submitted to the US Squash Scoring System, the greater the chance that your team is mentioned in the Sunday evening “Around the Courts” article.
  • Harrow Sports Player of the Week: Please nominate deserving players for Player of the Week honors by 6 PM ET on Monday. For the first week of the honor, we will cover the period of 10/15 – 11/10.
    • Criteria: A Player of the Week should have a significant impact on his or her team’s performance during the prior week and demonstrate sportsmanship.

Around the Courts: College Squash Highlights (11/10/2013)

College Squash AssociationNorthampton, MA — The 2013 – 2104 college squash season is underway. Let’s review some of the matches that have already occurred.

The Bucknell men hosted the first official matches of the season on October 20th. The Bison went 2-0 on the day with victories over Lehigh and Penn State. Lehigh also defeated Penn State.

A week later, Penn State rebounded with an 9-0 victory over Siena. Ithaca also defeated Siena.

At the beginning of November, the Naval Academy traveled to California to open the season. Navy went 2-0 on the West Coast with victories over Stanford and California Berkeley.

On the weekend of November 2nd and 3rd, the Lehigh men edged Swarthmore, 5-4, in a Quaker state showdown. In another in-state matchup,  the Virginia men shutout Richmond. Northeastern’s men hosted a round robin. The Huskies went 3-0 with victories over Siena, Bryant, and Vermont. Bryant and Boston College also defeated Siena and Vermont.

Vassar hosted the first Hudson Valley College Individual Squash Tournament. At the event were representatives from Fordham, Ithaca, and Vassar. Vassar’s Vincent Mencotti won the A draw, while Fordham’s Matt Crowe won the B draw.

On Friday, the Navy Round Robin began. Johns Hopkins escaped with a 5-4 victory over Virginia. The Cavaliers rebounded by shutting out Bard and Washington, and defeating Denison, 5-4. Elsewhere, the George Washington men and women both shutout Georgetown. Wellesley defeated Northeastern 8-1 to open the season. The Blue Pride continued their success with an 9-0 victory against BC on Saturday.

Haverford visited NYU on Saturday. The Ford women defeated NYU, 5-4, while the men fell 1-8.

A number of Midwest men’s teams were in Dayton this weekend. Northwestern went 3-0 with victories over Chicago, Illinois Champaign, and Duke. Notre Dame lost to Washington in St. Louis, but defeated Illinois Springfield.

In Midwest women’s action, Minnesota defeated Notre Dame, 6-1, and defeated Washington in St. Louis, 5-4.

The Ivy League Scrimmages were held at Yale this weekend. Although the results are unofficial, CollegeSquashAssociation.com will feature photos and videos from this event in the coming weeks.

Coaches and Team Contacts, please remember to enter your team’s results in the US Squash Scoring System on the day of each match. Each player must be named in the results (“Not on Roster” entries will not be tolerated) or penalties may be applied.

Dunlop 2013-2014 Men’s College Squash Preseason Team Rankings

After regaining the National Championship last season, Trinity College begins the season as the top team in the nation. This season it appears that many teams will be in the mix for the championship, so this will be an extremely interesting season for team rankings.

The following schools improved in the rankings from last season: Boston College, Charleston, Dartmouth, Denison, Drexel, Hobart, Johns Hopkins, Northeastern, and Siena.

The following schools dropped spots in the rankings: Amherst, Boston University, Fordham, Georgetown, Haverford, Lehigh, Minnesota, Tufts, and Williams.

Preseason rankings were based heavily on the team questionnaires returned for the 2013 – 2014 Season Previews, which included information on graduating and incoming players, and offseason training opportunities. Select schools have already commenced their seasons.  The results of these early matches were not factored into the preseason rankings. Teams that did not compete in the 2012 – 2013 Men’s College Squash Association National Team Championships were not ranked.

The following schools dropped spots in the rankings: Amherst, Brown, Conn College, Georgetown, Hamilton, and Virginia.
