2013 Men’s Ivy League College Squash Scrimmages: Yale and Columbia (Video)

New Haven, CT — At the 2013 Ivy League Scrimmages, Yale and Columbia played in the opening round of the event. Although the Ivy League Scrimmage results are unofficial, the players use the event to gauge their Ivy League competition. Yale University hosted the event.

Yale, who last season finished the season ranked 4th in the nation, finished second at the scrimmages. They lost to Harvard in the finals.

Columbia concluded the 2012 – 2013 season ranked 12th. On Saturday, the Lions opened this season with a 9-0 victory over George Washington.

Northampton, MA — For the week ending 11/24/2013, Hamilton’s Hannah Coffin and Drexel’s Ibrahim Bakir have been named the women’s and men’s [hpow].

A [hpow] should have a significant impact on his or her team’s performance during the prior week and demonstrate sportsmanship. Coaches and Sports Information Directors may nominate players.

Hannah Coffin (Hamilton): The 20th-ranked Hamilton Continentals hosted 12th-ranked Middlebury this past weekend. With the match tied at 4-4, number six Coffin faced the Panthers’ Amanda Chen. After falling behind 1-2, Coffin rallied to capture the final two games, each 11-9, to capture the match in five games (11-8, 3-11, 12-14, 11-9, and 11-9). The Continentals’ 5-4 upset of Middlebury is believed to be the program’s first victory over the Panthers since February 3, 2000.

Ibrahim Bakir (Drexel): Drexel University’s home opener featured a match-up with 11th-ranked Williams. Drexel, the 21st-ranked squad,  took a early 4-2 lead, but the Ephs battled back to knot the score at 4-4. Drexel’s top player, Bakir, faced Williams’ Jamie Rizzero to decide the match. After losing the first game, Bakir captured the individual and team match by winning the next three games (11-13, 11-8, 11-7, and 11-3).

  • MCSA teams that need to fix “Not on Roster” players ASAP or they will be removed from the rankings (first warning issued last week):

Except for Emerging Teams, matches with less than seven players per team will not count towards the required number of matches for entry into the National Team Championships.

Around the Courts: College Squash Highlights (11/24/2013)

Northampton, MA — Prior to Thanksgiving break, many schools staged upsets this weekend.

Northeastern and Tufts met on Tuesday. In the women’s match, Tufts prevailed, 9-0, but in the men’s match, the Huskies swept positions 4 – 9 to earn a 6-3 victory over higher ranked Tufts.

The Jumbos men continued their midweek match schedule against MIT. The lower ranked Engineers captured the match, 6-3. On Saturday, Bryant beat Tufts, 6-3.

Navy visited New England this weekend. On Friday, they defeated Conn College, 9-0, followed  by a 5-4 victory over Brown. On Sunday, they also defeated Wesleyan, 7-2.

On Saturday, Hamilton hosted Middlebury. The Panthers’ men blanked the Continentals. In the women’s match, Hamilton upset Middlebury, 5-4.

In other NESCAC action, Trinity travelled to Maine to face Bates. Both Bantam squads shutout the Bobcats.

Bowdoin met Tufts at MIT. The Polar Bears shutout both Tufts teams. Brown also defeated both Tuft squads, and the Bears’ women beat Mount Holyoke.

The Northeastern men defeated Boston University, 8-1. The Wesleyan men defeated Boston College.

Princeton opened the season in Lancaster against F&M. In the women’s match, Princeton prevailed, 9-0.  The men’s match featured a showdown between two top-7 teams. The lower-ranked Diplomats defeated the Tigers, 7-2, in a match that featured seven matches that went four or more games.

Penn shutout the Williams women on Saturday. For the men, the Quakers defeated the higher ranked Ephs, 8-1.

The Stanford and Cornell women met in Philadelphia. In this rivalry match, the Big Red won, 7-2. Cornell also shutout Drexel.

Johns Hopkins women lost to Virginia, 2-7, and Georgetown, 4-5, but defeated Haverford. Virginia defeated Georgetown, 6-3, and Haverford, 9-0. The Johns Hopkins men also defeated Haverford.

In another series of upsets, Drexel beat both Williams squads, each 5-4.

This weekend was the Liberty League Men’s Championship at St. Lawrence. On Saturday, St. Lawrence defeated both Vassar and Hobart. Rochester defeated Bard and Hobart. On Sunday, Rochester defeated Vassar, while St. Lawrence defeated Bard. The championship match featured Rochester, the 5th-ranked team in the nation, and St. Lawrence, the 6th-ranked team. St. Lawrence clinched the Liberty League title after the second round of matches.

The St. Lawrence’s women continued the upset trend by shutting out William Smith.

Coaches and Team Contacts, please remember to enter your team’s results in the US Squash Scoring System on the day of each match. Each player must be named in the results (“Not on Roster” entries will not be tolerated) or penalties may be applied.

Schools are reminded that to qualify for the National Team Championships, a minimum number of matches must be played at specific periods of the season:

2013-2014 Dunlop Men’s College Squash Team Rankings (11/17/2013)

There were a number of teams moving up the rankings this week. Johns Hopkins defeated Hobart, which earned the Blue Jays the 28th ranking position. NYU and Lehigh each defeated Haverford, moving them up to the 39th and 40th positions, respectively. Siena moved to 52nd with a victory over Bard, while Vermont ascended to 51st with a victory over Siena.

Georgetown defeated Johns Hopkins to take over the 29th ranking position. Johns Hopkins moves to 30th. Meanwhile, Northwestern enters the rankings at 38th after beating Minnesota.

Northampton, MA — For the week ending 11/17/2013, Georgetown’s Elizabeth Johnson and the Naval Academy’s Jim Kacergis have been named the women’s and men’s [hpow].

Elizabeth Johnson (Georgetown): The Georgetown and Johns Hopkins match has been closely contested the past few seasons. Georgetown, ranked 30th, upset 29th-ranked Johns Hopkins, 6-3. Johnson, Georgetown’s number 6, faced Johns Hopkins’ Caroline Plapinger. Like their teams, the two players matched up well. Johnson ultimately prevailed in four games (16-14, 7-11, 11-8, and 11-7).

Jim Kacergis (Naval Academy): With the Navy and Drexel match tied at 3-3, junior Kacergis took to the court at the number two position. He faced Drexel senior Justin Singh. The two played a tight three-game match, with Kacergis ultimately winning (12-10, 11-7, and 11-9). Navy prevailed in the team match 5-4. Kacergis went 4-0 at the Navy Round Robin, with victories against Bucknell, Drexel, Georgetown, and Hobart.

Around the Courts: College Squash Highlights (11/17/2013)

Northampton, MA — There were matches throughout the country this weekend, starting in northern Vermont and extending down to the Naval Academy.

Middlebury opened its new squash facility on Friday. The men hosted their coach’s alma mater, Rochester.  Despite the celebration of the new facility, the Panthers lost.

Also on Friday, the Williams men hosted Hamilton and Western Ontario. The Ephs defeated Hamilton, but lost to Western Ontario. Williams shutout the Hamilton women.

Tufts travelled to Mount Holyoke on Friday. The Lyons captured the match 8-1. In the Mid Atlantic, Georgetown beat Johns Hopkins.

Play at Williams continued on Saturday. Middlebury drove to Williams to face Stanford and Western Ontario. The Panthers defeated Stanford, but lost to Western Ontario. On Sunday, Williams shutout Stanford.

Also at Williams, Hamilton and Williams shutout Wellesley. The Ephs earned a 7-2 victory over Mount Holyoke and blanked Tufts.

In Boston, the Tufts men faced Boston University. The Jumbos got victories from their top five players and won the match 6-3 overall.

The Amherst men and women shutout Northeastern.

In Connecticut, the Wesleyan women shutout Conn College, while the men also defeated the Camels, 7-2. On Sunday, the Camel men defeated MIT. Wellesley blanked the Conn College women.

Siena travelled to Bard. The Bernie “Saint” Bernards  earned the upset with a 5-4 win. Fordham and Swarthmore also defeated Bard.

William Smith defeated Colgate to start the season 2-0.

The Haverford men hosted Vassar and Lehigh. The Fords lost to Lehigh but defeated Vassar. Lehigh also shutout the Brewers. The F&M women defeated Haverford, 9-0.

A number of teams travelled to Annapolis for the Navy Round Robin. In one of the key matches of the weekend, Navy held off Drexel, 5-4. The Midshipmen also defeated Hobart, Bucknell, and Georgetown. Drexel defeated Georgetown. Johns Hopkins defeated Hobart, but lost to George Washington. The Drexel women blanked Johns Hopkins.

USC defeated Notre Dame, 6-3.
