Washington University in St. Louis: 2014 – 2015 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

Washington University in St. LouisSt. Louis, MO — After finishing the 2013 – 2014 college squash season ranked 38th, Washington in St. Louis aims to improve its ranking this season. This is the third season for the Bears, but they already have a competitive history with Notre Dame, University of Minnesota, Cal, and Northwestern. To improve their rankings, Washington in St. Louis will need to face these squads and hopefully travel to the East Coast to challenge some new opponents. In addition, they will need to compete with and against teams with 9 players (last season only 30% of their regular season matches were with 9 players). The Bears’ ladder positions 6 and 7 were the most productive on the team last season, with each of those positions capturing 79% of their matches.  With the #7 from team championships having graduated, along with three other seniors, the Bears will need to fill four spots.

Bard College Annandale-on-Hudson, NY — With the commencement of the 2014 – 2015 college squash season, the Bard Raptors begin a new era. Craig Thorpe-Clark is taking over as the program’s coach. Thorpe-Clark brings a wealth of college squash experience to Annadale-On-Hudson. He coached the Vassar men and women and the Penn men for years.  The Raptors, who did not compete in Team Championships last season, are entering a new phase. According to Thorpe-Clark, the team is welcoming “the addition of several new players to the program with significant competition experience. Blended with several enthusiastic returners and some new faces, we are looking to improve and add extra depth to the line-up for the coming season.” The team will be focused on their Liberty League matches, especially against close neighbor Vassar. In addition, Bard always has competitive matches with Siena, another school in New York’s Hudson Valley, and the Raptors are looking forward to a match with Dickinson. Thorpe-Clark added that Bard is a “young co-ed team committed to improving and looking forward to testing their skills against all comers.”

Haverford: 2014 – 2015 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Haverford CollegeHaverford, PA — Haverford has many roster spots to fill for the upcoming season. The Fords graduated five players from last season’s National Team Championships. Yet the top of last season’s ladder was underclassmen, which according to head coach Niki Clement, “was a great learning experience for those players and presented them with new experiences and more complex play on court. With another season under their belt, one of our team goals will be to use the experience we gained last season to our advantage this season.” Haverford has two recruits coming in, who are expected to fill top-9 ladder positions. Clement adds that “our team consistently brings a hunger to practice and a motivation to improve. I can already tell that the team is fired up for another great season.” The team is adding several new matches to its schedule, including nearby Dickinson College, the newest varsity member of the College Squash Association. With only one senior on this year’s squad, this season may be the beginning of something special for Haverford.

Williams: 2014 – 2015 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

Williams CollegeWilliamstown, MA — Williams wants to move into the top 10 in the national rankings. Given that they only graduated a single player, #1 Alyssa Northrop, from their 2014 Team Championship line-up, they have the experience needed to make such a move. They will also be gaining 4 new players, which should make the roster very deep.  The Ephs are planning a winter training trip to Santa Barbara, CA, which will be a relief from the cold of Williamstown. To make a move in the rankings, Williams will need to focus on close matches. The squad was 1 for 4 in 5-4 matches, losing to Drexel, Bates, and Middlebury. Eli O’Neil and Caroline Sawin, who is also a member of the Williams golf team, will lead the Ephs as senior co-captains. If last season can serve as the foundation for this year, movement up the rankings is a real possibility.

Middlebury: 2014 – 2015 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Middlebury CollegeMiddlebury, VT — The Summers Cup (C Division) has been incredibly successful for the Middlebury Panthers over the past six years. The squad has captured four Summers Cups during that time period, including last season’s cup. Looking back at the unexpected passing of beloved coach John Illig, the Panthers can remember that their last match under his leadership brought a trophy back to Vermont.  Mike Morgan, Middlebury’s women’s tennis coach, will serve as the interim squash coach this season. According to co-captain Reed Palmer, Middlebury wishes “to come together as a team to play with grace, class, dignity, humility, and respect in memory of former Middlebury coach and friend John Illig.” The team will continue the Illig tradition of a fall hike. The Panthers are returning 7 of the 9 players from their Team Championship roster, including senior William Hanley. Hanley, a southpaw, won the clinching match in the Summers Cup final against Brown. The team will also welcome 3 freshmen with prep squash experience. Look for Middlebury to be focused this season and attempt to move into the Hoehn Cup (B Division).

Drexel: 2014 – 2015 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Drexel UniversityPhiladelphia, PA — It is hard to believe that Drexel’s varsity squash team only launched in 2011. Since then, the team has been on a meteoric rise. Starting last season, the team was ranked 21st in the nation. During the season, they peaked at 14th, before finishing the season ranked 16th.  With their improvement, it was not a surprise that Drexel was awarded the 2014 Barnaby Award. This season, the team plans to join the top 10 teams in nation.  To achieve that goal, the Dragons will need more wins at the bottom of their order. Last season, the bottom 3 of the ladder captured 36% of their matches, compared to 45% for the middle 3 and 61% for the top 3. The Dragons won 5 of 8 5-4 matches last season. The 7 players returning from the starting 9 at Team Championships can use that valuable experience this season. The team will be joined by four players, three of whom are expected to play in the top 4. This season marks the first graduating class that has played four years of varsity squash at Drexel. According to Head Coach John White, senior Sebastian Dangond, one of the team’s first recruits, “has been a dedicated and important part of the team from the start.” Dangond and fellow senior Harshil Dakonia could hardly have pictured the Dragons’ rise over the course of their collegiate experiences.

Tufts: 2014 – 2015 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

Tufts UniversityMedford, MA — Tufts finished last season as the 27th-ranked team in the nation and placed 3rd in the Epps Cup (D Division). This season, the Jumbos want to improve. According to senior co-captain Ann Bellinger, the team goal “is to be competitive in the C Division at Nationals.” Critical to that goal is regular season match ups with other NESCAC schools, Mount Holyoke, St. Lawrence, and Wellesley. The team did particularly well in close matches last season. They defeated Boston College (twice), Conn College, and William Smith in 5-4 matches. The Jumbos’ sole 4-5 loss came in the Epps Cup against Virginia, the eventual winner of that division. A key step to improving this season will be the lower third of the team. Last season, positions 7, 8, and 9 combined to win 28% of their matches. With two seniors from the starting nine graduating and number 1 Paget Stanco studying abroad in the fall, the team will need to rely on its six new players to fill the vacancies.

Trinity: 2014 – 2015 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Trinity CollegeHartford, CT — It has been a long time since a senior class at Trinity graduated with only one national championship. In fact, the last senior class to do so was the class of 1999, which captured the title that season to begin Trinity’s extraordinary run. The class of 2015 already has one national title from the 2012 – 2013 season, and they intend to earn their second title this season. With eight players returning from last season’s starting nine at team championships, including five seniors, the Bantams have the experience to accomplish their goal. They will also have James Evans, a member of the English World Junior team, who is expected to join the middle of the Bantams’ ladder. Trinity proved itself last season in close matches, going 2-0 in 5-4 matches against Franklin & Marshall and Yale.  Trinity was only defeated by Harvard last season, including in the national championship final on the Crimson’s home courts.  This season, Trinity is hosting the national championships, and the Bantams hope the Potter Cup returns to Hartford for the foreseeable future.
