Bowdoin: 2015 – 2016 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

Bowdoin CollegeBrunswick, ME — Bowdoin made the most of their Walker Cup run at the 2014 – 2015 Team Championships. The Polar Bears were seeded 3rd and made it to the finals. This was especially gratifying since during the regular season, Bowdoin lost 3-6 to Hamilton. In the Walker Cup semifinals, that score was reversed, and Bowdoin advanced to the finals to face Amherst. After losing three players to graduation, the Polar Bears are expecting four first-year students to join the line-up, including one player expected  to compete for a position in the top 3. This should strengthen Bowdoin’s line-up. Last season, Bowdoin went 3-0 in 5-4 matches, and that experience will be beneficial this season. According to head coach Tomas Fortson, the goals of the season are to “develop our team dynamics, improve our skills consistently, and be at our best in competition, while enjoying the process.” Look for Bowdoin to move up the NESCAC and national rankings this season.

William Smith: 2015 – 2016 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

William Smith College

Geneva, NY — William Smith last played for the Kurtz Cup in 2011; since then, the Herons have competed in the D Division, where they’ve reached the final three times and won the Epps Cup once. This season, the Herons hope to either return to the Walker Cup or, falling short, contend for the Epps Cup. With all but two players from last season’s championship line-up returning, William Smith’s goals should be within reach. Madison Bradley and Stacy Maceda, two new players, are expected to find spots in the bottom third of the Herons’ starting line-up, adding depth to the team.  Among the returners is senior Justine Shank, who interned last year with Major League Ultimate, a professional Ultimate Frisbee league. Fellow senior Erin Casey will captain the squad. Casey and Shank are the only members of the class of 2016 who competed at last year’s Women’s National Team Championships, so whatever momentum the Herons can gain this year should carry them into the future.

Cornell: 2015 – 2016 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Cornell UniversityIthaca, NY — With the loss of only one senior from last year’s Team Championships, Cornell is fielding a young team again this season. In fact, according to head coach Mark Devoy, the Big Red squad is “mainly freshmen and sophomores, so it will be exiting to see how they perform.”  During the offseason, Cornell endowed its squash coaching position. Devoy became the first James Broadhead ’57 Head Coach of Squash. Cornell also added new electronic scoreboards to their home courts. In addition to the eight returning players from last season, Cornell is expecting six freshman to join the squad. The Big Red want to return to a top-10 ranking position this season. To accomplish this goal,  each player will need to step up, especially the top 3, who collectively had an 0.4259 win percentage last season. If the young Cornell squad flourishes, look for them to surprise many teams in the lower half of the top-10 and to regain a position in the Potter Cup (A Division).

The Blue Pride want to extend that streak this season, and they know that Mount Holyoke, their top Seven Sisters rival, is eager to regain the crown. Wellesley is focused on matches with last year’s Walker Cup squads. The Blue Pride will need to perform well against these teams to move up the rankings to receive a higher seeding in Team Championships. The team has already commenced volunteering efforts this season. In early October, the squad participated in the “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” initiative, Wellelsey’s fifth consecutive year. They are also volunteering with SquashBusters and the American Cancer Society Walk. The team will have two seniors, Kate Loftus, who learned to play squash in college, and Gabriella Wynn. Wellesley will need a few quality wins during the regular season if they want to maintain a position in this season’s Walker Cup.

Franklin and Marshall College

Lancaster, PA — After finishing 7th in the B Division last season, the F&M women have their eyes on the Kurtz Cup. With their top six players from last season’s team championship roster returning, they are in a good position to move up in the division. Among the returners is senior Emily Caldwell, who will be co-captaining the squad with junior Katherine O’Brien.  Head coach Gavin Jones speaks highly of Caldwell: “She is a very hard worker and a dedicated student athlete. Emily has had a great college carer for F&M, and she is always there supporting team members.” F&M will also see three new players join the team. Ellen Verry, Lauren Cunningham, and Melissa Epstein are all expected to play in the top 9, adding depth to a young team that is gaining experience. Lafayette: 2015 – 2016 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Lafayette CollegeEaston, PA — Lafayette is motivated to return to Team Championships this season. After only playing four matches last year. the team fell short of the qualifying standard for nationals. This season, the Leopards are ready. According to Charlie Mullaney, Lafayette’s “goals for this year are to take advantage of the enthusiasm of our new players and to beat our previous year records, as well as to play as much squash as possible and be a competitive team.” The team is looking forward to round robins at Bard and the Jesters tournament in Baltimore. The Leopards’ traditional school rival, Lehigh, will of course be an important match. One of the five captains for Lafayette will be Andrew Winn. Winn “puts his heart and soul out onto the court and even with our record remains extraordinarily positive and is always looking to get someone else hooked on the game we all know and love. Specifically, this kid lives and breathes squash,” states Mullaney. Lafayette appears motivated for the 2015 – 2016 season.

2015 – 2016 Intercollegiate Doubles Championships Results

0

ussquashdoublesPhiladelphia, PA — The 2015 – 2016 Intercollegiate Doubles Championships were held this weekend at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia, the Germantown Cricket Club, and the Philadelphia Cricket Club

This season, 9 schools were represented at the event: Drexel, Haverford, Franklin & Marshall, Navy, NYU, Penn, Princeton, Rochester, and St. Lawrence.

The intercollegiate doubles championships, which were restarted in 1988 with help from Keen Butcher and Rusty Ball, celebrated their twenty-eighth consecutive men’s tournament, fifth year of women’s competition, and fourth year of mixed doubles competition.

The women’s draw had two squads. Princeton players and defending champions Maria Elena Ubina and Olivia Fiechter faced Franklin & Marshall’s Sherilyn Yang and Dulakshi Elikewela. Ubina and Fiechter earned their second consecutive title with a three game victory (15-8, 15-8, and 15-8). This is Ubina’s third time winning the women’s doubles title.

In the men’s event, Rochester’s Neil Cordell and Mario Yanez, the defending champions, faced Navy’s Senen Ubina
and Billy Kacergis. This marked Kacergis’ third consecutive trip to the finals. After being down 0-2 in games, Ubina and Kacergis came back to capture the match in five games (11-15, 5-15, 15-13, 15-14, and 15-12). This is Navy’s second doubles title in the past three years.

In the mixed doubles tournament, Princeton’s Jarryd Osborne and Maria Elena Ubina met Penn’s George Lemmon and Anaka Alankamony in the final. The Penn duo ended Ubina’s two year winning streak in the event, capturing the match in three games (15-9, 15-6, and 15-12)

Northwestern: 2015 – 2016 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Northwestern University

Evanston, IL — Northwestern made it to the semifinals of the Serues Cup last season, and they met Colgate in the play-off match for 3rd place in the F Division. The match was close, but the 5-4 decision didn’t go the Wildcats’ way. “Colgate defeated us at Nationals last year, and we hope to defeat them this year when we play them during the regular season,” explains co-captain Peter Haun. The young squad has only lost one player to graduation, and more experience may be enough to tip the scales against the Raiders. Haun reports that “last year we had four freshmen enter the top 9, and we are looking to recruit at least three more for the 2015 – 2016 season.” Northwestern dominated matches in the bottom third of the later, notching an impressive 0.875 percentage. This season, they’ll be looking to extend that success to the middle three ladder positions.

Bucknell: 2015 – 2016 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Bucknell UniversityLewisburg, PA — After finishing last season as the 31st ranked team in the nation, Bucknell wants to get back to a top-30 ranking position. This goal may be challenging given that the Bison graduated four players from last season’s Team Championships. Yet the Bison are expecting eight players to join their squad this season. Fitness is a key area for Bucknell. According to co-captain Mike Gagnier, “We plan on doing more fitness to help our stamina. We lost too many five game matches last year because our players were running out of gas. Five game matches are so critical when we’re playing rival teams, and we want to put ourselves in the position to win every one of them.” Bucknell knows that matches with Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, and MIT will be crucial to their season. Even if Bucknell increases their fitness and capitalizes on key matches, the Bison still may be left out of a talented top 30 ranking position at season end.
