William Smith: 2016 – 2017 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

William Smith College Geneva, NY — None of William Smith’s current players were in college when the Herons last won the Epps Cup (D Division), at the 2013 Women’s College Squash Association National Team Championships. Head coach Chip Fishback would like his seniors to earn their first division title or move up into the Walker Cup (C Division). With the graduation of one senior from last season’s starting nine and three players studying abroad during the first semester, look for William Smith to play its best squash during the second semester. With five first-year students joining the Herons and the return of their former #1 player, William Smith should have a deeper roster than last season. Crucial to their success will be close matches. Last year, the Herons went 0-2 in 5-4 matches. With one of those 5-4 losses coming to Epps Cup winners Wesleyan in the semifinals of the Epps Cup, William Smith appears poised to be in the mix for a top-25 ranking position this season.

Dartmouth: 2016 – 2017 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Dartmouth College Hanover, NH — Dartmouth had a season for the ages last year. In December, the Big Green shocked the world and defeated Harvard. The last time Dartmouth defeated the Crimson was during the 1945 – 46 season, when according to the Crimson record book, no formal team existed for Harvard due to World War II. To add to the magical season, Dartmouth earned its first victory over Princeton since Ivy League athletic play was formalized in the late 1950s.  For their Ivy League accomplishments last season, the team earned two of the three Ivy League individual awards: Rookie of the Year went to Carson Spahr and Coach of the Year went to Hansi Wiens. Captain Glen Brickman will lead a squad that returns seven of its starting nine from Team Championships, including their top-4 players. The returners’ experience should only help the team this year. Dartmouth’s strength last season came from the lower two thirds of the ladder. If they maintain that strength and improve slightly at the top of the ladder, look for the Big Green to be in the fight for the middle of the Potter Cup.

Drexel: 2016 – 2017 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

Drexel University Philadelphia, PA — Drexel continued its accession up the rankings last season. The team concluded the year as the runners-up in the Kurtz Cup (B Division) at the Women’s National Team Championships, a program-best finish. To improve even further, Drexel will need to strengthen the bottom of its ladder. Last season, the top 3 and middle 3 had .667 and .648 win percentages, while the lower 3 only had a .389 win percentage. Wih Drexel’s top-4 players returning, look for the Dragons to remain strong at the top of the ladder. Mary Fung-A-Fat and Ryan Morgan will captain a squad with seven of the eleven players returning from last season’s team championships. The team is also finalizing its roster of incoming players. During the offseason, Fung-A-Fat represented Guyana in the 2016 Ladies CASA Championship. According to assistant coach Kelsey Engman, Fung-A-Fat, a two-year captain, “is a squash nut, a court rat, and a good student. She gracefully stepped into her role as captain and has been a leader and a friend to her teammates and a great help to her coaches. We look forward to seeing her play in her senior season and we will miss her when she goes.” If Drexel can improve the bottom of its ladder, look for the Dragons to be in the hunt for the Howe Cup.

Bates: 2016 – 2017 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Bates College Lewiston, ME — Last season, Bates captured the Summers Cup (C Division) at the Men’s National Team Championships. The Bobcats will look to return to the Hoehn Cup (B Division) this season. To do so, they will need to improve their performance in close matches. Last season, they went 0-4 in 5-4 matches. With the graduation of two-time Pool Trophy (individual championship) winner and four-time NESCAC Player of the Year Ahmed Abdel Khalek, the Bobcats will look to senior Ahmed Hatata as their anchor at the top of the ladder. Last season, Abdel Khalek and Hatata went undefeated in dual match play. Hatata is looking to become Bates’ second four-time All-American. Hatata and captain Spencer Burt will lead the team with nine of eleven players from last season’s Team Championship roster returning. With the addition of five talented freshmen, look for Bates’s roster to be extremely competitive. Helping the Bobcats on their quest for the Hoehn Cup will be new technology. “We installed a new video analysis system that will complement our scoreboards and live match results displays and allow us to watch, display, playback, record and live stream everything that happens on each of our courts, with audio,” explains head coach Pat Cosquer. If Bates can improve its record in close matches, look for the Bobcats to move up the rankings.

2016 – 2017 College Squash Season Previews

College Squash AssociationHatfield, MA — As we prepare for the 2016 – 2017 college squash season, CollegeSquashAssociation.com will be publishing previews of varsity and select club teams.

As in past seasons, one to three previews will be published per day. The previews will be published in a random order, so please check back frequently (or follow the CSA on Twitter or Facebook) to find your favorite team’s preview. The 2016 – 2017 College Squash Season Preview page has been set up to display an alphabetical listing of all published previews.  This page will grow throughout the coming weeks.

In early September, a preseason questionnaire was sent to coaches, team contacts, and sports information directors of all varsity and select club teams. The questionnaire covered such topics as expected rosters, first-year players, key matches, captains, and program changes (new staff, facility upgrades, etc.). Based on the information from the responses to the preseason questionnaire, team websites, and the CSA’s archives, the previews were assembled.

CollegeSquashAssociation.com will only publish previews for varsity and select club teams that submitted their preseason questionnaires. Teams that haven’t submitted their questionnaires yet are encouraged to do so. Teams may submit questionnaires until September 29, 2016.

After the 2016 – 2017 college squash season previews have concluded, the preseason team rankings for both the women and the men will be released.

Doyle Inducted into Men’s College Squash Hall of Fame

0

Harvard UniversityStamford, CT — In March at the CSA Gala hosted by Chelsea Piers (CT),  Bill Doyle, the former head coach at Harvard University, was inducted into the Men’s College Squash Hall of Fame.

A 1985 graduate of Trinity, Doyle was a four-time All-American for the Bantams. He captained Trinity to second and third place finishes in the national rankings. After college, Doyle played professional squash.

His coaching career was brief but extremely successful. In seven years at the helm of Harvard, he guided the Crimson men to seven Ivy League titles. During those seasons, Harvard was 42-0 in Ivy League play. He coached three Ivy League Rookies of the Year and eight Ivy League Players of the Year.

Outside of Ivy League competition, he guided the Harvard men to five Potter Cups (national team championships). These national championships came during an era of major change for collegiate squash. In his second season, 1993 – 1994, Harvard won the title on narrow courts with the North American hardball. A year later, 1994 – 1995, the Crimson won again playing with the softball on narrow courts.

The Association Trophy, which was awarded to the team with the best dual-match record in the regular season, was presented to Doyle and Harvard five times.

Doyle coached four Pool Trophy (men’s individual championship) winners.

Doyle went 93-4 during his seven years with the Harvard men. At the time of his induction, Doyle’s .959 winning percentage remains the best in Crimson squash history.

In 2007, Doyle was inducted into the Women’s College Squash Hall of Fame. He went 86-3 leading the Harvard women. This included six Ivy League titles, four Ivy League Players of the Year, and three Ivy League Rookies of the Year. The Crimson women captured five Howe Cups (national team championships) under Doyle, six Barhite Awards (best dual match record), and four Ramsay Cups (individual national championships).

Below is video of Doyle’s induction.
