Tufts: 2011 – 2012 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Medford, MA — Tufts has been in the midst of a rebuilding cycle, and thanks to turnover, the team has had to start each of the past two season with a drastically different line-up.

Tufts can expect more stability moving forward. Although the Jumbos have lost three of their top four players from last year, this year’s squad  will primarily consist of freshmen and sophomores.

Six first-year players have joined the team. Alex Nalle (Germantown Friends), Zach Schweitzer (Chestnut Hill Academy), and Gordon Silverman (Phoenix Country Day) are expected to play in the top six. Joe Marks (Belmont Hill), Hugo Meggitt (Princeton Day), and Elliot Kardon (Weston) will be battling with several returners for places in the starting line-up.

“The team expects again to be in a rebuilding phase but with a team two years younger than last year,” reports head coach Doug Eng. “The team’s main goal is to keep improving and break back into the Summers Division at Nationals.”

Connecticut College: 2011 – 2012 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

New London, CT — Connecticut College’s trip to the Conroy Cup finals at the 2010-2011 Men’s National Team Championships was relatively uneventful. The top-seeded Camels defeated Northwestern 7-2 in the first round of D Division play and then swept Tufts in the semi-finals.

The finals were a different story. Facing Hobart, the Camels had to battle through the final match to come out with the 5-4 win and D Division championship.

Conn has graduated two players from that division-winning team: number 5 Tyler Stilwell and number 9 Blay Bradley. Three new players will join the team. They are Brian Mullen of the Pomfret School, Colin Forsyth of Canisius High School in New York, and Mike Coscarelli of Kingswood Oxford.

2011 Men’s College Squash Video: Pioneer Valley Invitational – Bates and St. Lawrence #1s

South Hadley, MA — The 2011 Pioneer Valley Invitational featured forty-four matches, including a dramatic match between Bates and St. Lawrence.  The two schools traded matches until the very end. The match at the number 1 position was no exception.

Bates’ William Katz and St. Lawrence’s Alex Dodge had many similarities.  Dodge was the captain of St. Lawrence and was named to the Liberty League All-Conference team.  On the season, he went 9-11.  Katz was a two-year captain of the Bobcats.  He went 14-8 on the season and was named to the New England Small Conference Athletic Association (NESCAC) All-Conference team.

The match between the two seniors went five games with Katz emerging victorious (8-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-5, and 11-9). Bates captured the team match 5-4.

Below is video from the match between Katz and Dodge.

William Smith: 2011 – 2012 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

Geneva, NY — Even though there weren’t enough teams for a full Liberty League championship in women’s squash, “conference” matches against Vassar and St. Lawrence remain key matches on the Herons’ schedule.

The 2011-2012 squad will have one new player who should be competing in the top 3: first-year Andrea Tran. Tran should help compensate for the loss of Alexa Comstock, who played number 2 last year. The Herons also lost Else Ross at number 8 and Madeline Friedman at number 10.

William Smith just hired a full-time strength and conditioning coach this year, who will be working with the players all year.

“Squash has become a ‘serious’ sport on campus, and our players love this new-found respect,” reports head coach Chip Fishback.

Bucknell: 2011 – 2012 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Lewisburg, PA — Bucknell squash has made significant gains since the program was started three years ago, climbing from 55th in the nation during their first season to 42nd last year. In 2011-2012 the Bison had a win over Vassar, a varsity program, as well as a near win over Johns Hopkins, who finished the season ranked 38th. To top it all off, the Bison defeated Boston University 5-4 to win the Serues Cup (F Division).

“The Bucknell Squash team is looking forward to its fourth season and first as a university funded program,” says senior Kirk Bonner, who has been a driving force behind the program’s growth. “Lying near two hotbeds for squash and seeing only one player graduate, we are exited to have a more competitive ladder this season then ever.”  The fact that this will be the first year Bucknell squash has been a university-funded program should give the team an added boost and bodes well its long-term health.

George Washington: 2011 – 2012 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Washington, DC — George Washington has moved up spots in the national rankings in each of the past five seasons. The Colonials have climbed from 30th in 2007 to 18th last year, and now the Summers Cup finalists are aiming for the B Division and the top 16.

GW came within a match of winning the 2011 Summers Cup, and the team that defeated them — Bowdoin — will be one of the Colonials’ key matches along with Bates, Middlebury, and St. Lawrence. Bates and Middlebury had strong wins over GW, and it should be interesting to see how much of the gap the Colonials will be able to close.

On paper the 2011 Colonials look to have an edge over their 2010 counterparts. The team lost two players from the middle of the line-up and have gained one player who should compete in the top 3, Ibrahim Bakir of American University Cairo. David Moxley (Hill School) is expected to fill in one of the spots in the middle of the order, and Kyle Webb (Greens Farms) and Rendy Mao (Mercersburg) are both expected to play in the bottom 3.

Vassar: 2011 – 2012 Women’s College Squash Season Previews

Poughkeepsie, NY — After making it to the C Division finals the year before, Vassar finished last season ranked 22nd overall. It was the first time since 2001 that the Brewers ended a season outside the top 20.

Having lost the bookends of their line-up, number 1 Kristine Bell and number 9 Liz Anderson, the Brewers are still in a rebuilding cycle. The heart of the line-up will be back, and expect the team to be stronger in the spring. That’s when Jill Levine and Sanam Khanna will be back from study abroad, though Avery  Siciliano will be abroad for the second semester.

The team has two new first-year players. Devina Vaid comes to Vassar from the Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Mumbai, and Alexandra Bowditch comes from Poly Prep Country Day in Brooklyn. Former Rochester player Robert McDavid also joins the program as assistant coach.

“All heart” is how head coach Jane Parker describes the team. “They never say never. They are all invested in having a good season.”

Bard: 2011 – 2012 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Annandale-on-Hudson, NY — There’s good news coming out of New York: Bard is building four new international courts this fall. The Raptors have also joined the Liberty League, and former Penn head men’s coach Craig Thorpe-Clark will be back to help the team on a consulting basis.

All of this is encouraging news for a program that struggled last year, ending the season with just two wins and the weakest final ranking in program history. Don’t expect a repeat in 2011-2012, though. The Raptors have expanded their schedule to 20 matches, including the Navy Round Robin and the Liberty League Championships. The added match experience should serve Bard well when it comes time for the Men’s National Team Championships, and the new courts should help support the program’s health in the future.

Bard faces Vassar and Fordham early in the season, and those matches should be good tests for the team.

Dartmouth: 2011 – 2012 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Hanover, NH — Dartmouth will travel to Ithaca in early February to take on Ivy rival Cornell, a crucial match if the Big Green hope to move into the top 6. As part of their preparation, the team will travel to Mexico in January with the women’s team for a training trip.

All but one player from last season’s top ten is returning, and three new players should make an impact on the roster. One thing the players will be working hard on this year is their fitness. Two-time All-American Chris Hanson competed in several triathlons over the summer, while Robbie Maycock represented Bermuda in the Men’s Team World Championships in Germany.

“It’s a great group of guys who are close together and good friends on and off the court,” says head coach Hansi Wiens of the team.
