2009-2010 Men’s All-Ivy League Team Announced

1

Northampton, MA — IvyLeagueSports.com recently announced the 2009-2010 men’s All-Ivy League team.

Harvard senior Colin West was named Ivy League Player of the Year. A three-time All-American, West was named 2007 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and received all-league honors in each of his four years of college play.

West has been a standout player at Harvard throughout his college career, and this season he set a high standard of play and sportsmanship as co-captain of the Crimson. He went 16-1, finishing with a perfect 6-0 record against Ivy League opponents. He also went undefeated at the men’s Individual Championship, winning the men’s national title and receiving the Skillman Award, one of the top individual honors in men’s college squash. Harvard junior Richard Hill was also named to the team.

West’s opponent in the Individual Championship finals, Princeton freshman Todd Harrity, was named Rookie of the Year. Harrity finished the season with a 14-5 record and only lost to one Ivy League opponent: West. Harrity was third in the CSA’s final men’s individual rankings, and will certainly be a player to watch in the coming years.

Aaron Fuchs of Yale joined West as the only other senior on the All-Ivy squad. Yale, the Ivy League champions and national team finalists, had the most players earning league honors. First-year players Kenneth Chan and Hywel Robinson also received All-Ivy honors for the Bulldogs.

The league recognized two players from Princeton, Harrity and sophomore Kelly Shannon, and two players from Dartmouth, Chris Hanson and Nick Sisodia, marking the first time since the 2004-2005 season that the Big Green has been represented on the All-Ivy team.

Congratulations to all the members of the 2009-2010 All-Ivy League Team!

2009-2010 All-Ivy League Women’s Squash Team Announced

0

Northampton, MA — Ivy League Sports has announced the 2009-2010 women’s All-Ivy team.

Harvard first-year Laura Gemmell earned both Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year honors. Gemmell went undefeated in her first year of intercollegiate play, finishing the season with a perfect 16-0 record. Playing at number 1 for the Crimson, she did not lose a game during the regular season, winning all her matches 3-0.

As dominant as her play was all season, Gemmell’s performance in the women’s individual championship finals showcased the depth of her talent. Trinity junior Pamela Hathway took Gemmell to five games, pushing the Toronto native harder than she had been in match play all season. The national title came down to the final points, with Gemmell pulling away at the very end to win the women’s individual championship.

Gemmell’s Ramsay Cup win was not her first national title of the season: she also helped lead the undefeated Crimson to their eleventh national team title. Her teammate, 2009 Ivy League Rookie of the Year Nirasha Gurgue, also earned All-Ivy honors this year.

Two seniors were named to the All-Ivy team: Penn’s Kristen Lange and Yale’s Alia Aziz. Lange, who earned All-Ivy honors in each of her four years of college play, was the 2009 Ivy League Player of the Year and the 2007 Rookie of the Year. Aziz, a first-time All-Ivy honoree, was the recipient of the 2010 Richey Award, one of the top honors in women’s college squash.

Two other Yale players, juniors Logan Greer and Sarah Toomey, were also named to the All-Ivy team, as the Bulldogs led the way with the most players earning league honors. Princeton had two players — junior Jackie Moss and first-year Julie Cerullo — on the team, and Dartmouth had one player, Valeria Wiens, the first player to earn All-Ivy honors for the Big Green in five years.

Congratulations to the members of the 2009-2010 All-Ivy League team!

US Professional Squash Tournament Features Several College Players

US Pro Squash recently held a tournament at Franklin & Marshall College. Several college players entered the tournament as amateurs.  Below is a description of the event from US Pro Squash.

Lancaster, PA — US Pro Squash was on campus from April 8-11 for the Franklin & Marshall College Invitational Pro Squash Tournament. Two-time World Champion David Palmer won the championship with a 3-0 victory over ’08 Egyptian Champion Wael El Hindi. The four-day tournament featured top-level squash as well as important community outreach and clinics. In addition to the pro tournament, the squash pros ran a clinic with the Franklin & Marshall Squash ACES students and community players.

The draw included 3 players who competed at the collegiate level this year. Two-time College Squash Association national individual champion and Trinity #1 Baset Chaudhry made his US Pro Squash professional debut. Chaudhry lost to El Hindi in the quarters, but played well in the consolation bracket, winning the plate division in a five-game war with Franklin & Marshall #2 Gui de Melo. Competing in the tournament as an amateur, de Melo showed how well he can play under pressure. He and Chaudhry battled for over an hour, with Chaudhry ultimately prevailing 11-8 in the fifth game.

Franklin & Marshall #1 Gabe de Melo, who also played as an amateur, lost to David Palmer in the quarter finals (3-1) and to US National Team Member Chris Gordon in the consolation bracket finals. Joe McManus, US Pro Squash CEO, said he was impressed with Gabe’s play. “Gabe had a strong contingent of fans from the college come out and cheer him on in the quarters. I was very impressed with his level of play. He took the first game from Palmer and equipped himself well on court. All credit to him.”

“This tournament gave us the opportunity to bring world class squash to a top tier college program,” said McManus. With Palmer and El Hindi playing, the crowd certainly saw top-notch squash. “We also highlighted the elite level of America’s top college players. Although the touring pros were a little stronger, these college players showed that they deserved to be on the same court as the pros.”

“Baset is a great young man,” continued McManus. “I was thrilled that he could join us for the event. Also, F&M has a great future with the de Melo brothers leading the way. Coach White is building a very strong program in Lancaster, PA.”

Men’s College Squash Video: Amherst and Bates Number 1s

Hartford, CT — Recently, NESCAC announced its Men’s All-Conference team. Bates’ Kush Mahan was named to the first team, while Amherst’s Brian Warner was named to the second team. Here is video from their match in February.

2010 NESCAC Men’s All Conference Team

Northampton, MA — The New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) has announced its 2009-2010 All-Conference teams.

Among the twenty athletes honored were seven seniors: Ethan Buchsbaum (Williams), Baset Chaudhry (Trinity), David Funk (Bowdoin), Kush Mahan (Bates), Christian Henze (Williams), Palmer Higgins (Bowdoin), and Supreet Singh (Trinity). Henze is a first-time All-NESCAC honoree, while Funk, Mahan, Higgins, and Singh have all been recognized by the conference in the past. Buchsbaum and Chaudhry have been awarded First Team status every year since NESCAC starting naming an all-conference team in 2008.

Buchsbaum and Mahan were also named co-Players of the Year.

Playing at number one for Williams, Buchsbaum helped lead the Ephs to a second-place finish in the Hoehn Cup (“B” Division) of the 2010 Men’s National Team Championships. He finished his senior year with a 10-11 regular season record. Buchsbaum was also named to NESCAC’s All-Academic and All-Sportsmanship teams, one of only four athletes out of all the NESCAC student-athletes playing winter sports to earn all three conference honors. (The other three athletes to be named to all three teams — Funk, Samantha Smith of Colby, and Jo-Ann Jee of Trinity — were all squash players.)

Mahan was also named to the All-Academic team while notching a 15-3 record during the regular season. Along the way, Mahan defeated Trinity’s Singh in five games during the Bantams’ first trip to Lewiston. Mahan also had impressive wins over Gabriel de Melo of F&M.

“Kush had an amazing year,” says Bates coach Pat Cosquer. “Aside from his own personal accomplishments on the squash court, he was able to lead his team effectively and get the most out of the men. He was able to perform when the pressure was on at the top spot all year and be an inspirational captain and leader at the same time, and I am proud to play a role in his development.”

Cosquer was recognized by his colleagues as Men’s Coach of the Year; he was also named Women’s Coach of the Year. The Bates men tied their team record for the most wins — 20 — in a season, and they finished twelfth at the 2010 Men’s National Team Championships.

Along with Mahan’s wins over de Melo, Cosquer pointed to Jordan Greenberg’s 5-game victory against Saint Lawrence at Yale, and Bobby Burns’ and RJ Keating’s victories over Dartmouth at Bates as some of the on-court highlights of the season. Another highlight was the Maine Event weekend, where the two Bates squads together won seven out of nine matches, including big wins over Mount Holyoke for the women and Brown for the men.

“I am very proud of both teams and their accomplishments and happy for Kush, Bobby [Burns], Will [Katz], Cheri-Ann [Parris] and Hannah [Laverty] for receiving recognition for and validation of their hard work and dedication to the game and to our program at Bates this season,” Cosquer says. Burns, Katz, and Laverty all earned All-NESCAC honors as well, and Parris was named Rookie of the Year for the women.

Caleb Garza of Connecticut College was named Rookie of the Year for the men. Garza finished his first season of intercollegiate play with a 22-5 record, playing number one for the Camels.

According to Connecticut College coach Bill McNally, Garza was looking forward to playing on a team since his high school did not have one. “In his freshman year he quickly established himself as the best player at Connecticut College and through dint of hard work and a low keyed personality soon became the team leader,” McNally says.  “He is popular with teammates and is an exemplar of sportsmanship.  He will have a great collegiate squash career.” Garza also received second-team All-NESCAC honors.

Congratulations to the members of the 2009-2010 All-NESCAC teams!

Harvard Announces Squash Coaching Change and National Search

1

Cambridge, MA — The following is a statement from Harvard University:

Nichols Family Director of Athletics Bob Scalise announced Tuesday that the appointment for Satinder Bajwa, head coach for Harvard men’s and women’s squash, will not be renewed for the 2010-11 season.

Bajwa recently completed his 11th season at Harvard with the Crimson women’s team completing a perfect season at 12-0 with the CSA national championship. This year’s teams also saw Crimson players win the individual national championships on both the men’s and women’s side of the court. Harvard players have won two team and five individual CSA championships under Bajwa. The men’s squash claimed four Ivy League titles, while the women’s squash grabbed five Ancient Eight crowns during Bajwa’s stint with the programs.

“I appreciate the hard work that coach Bajwa demonstrated on behalf of Harvard men’s and women’s squash during his tenure,” said Scalise. “We have decided to go in a different direction with the leadership of the program.”

Harvard squash has won a total of 43 national championships, including 31 on the men’s side and 12 for the women’s team. In addition, the men have won 36 Ivy League crowns, while the women have been the conference champion on 17 occasions. Thirty-three Harvard men have been the recipient of the Pool Trophy, given to the individual national champion, while 11 women have earned the Ramsay Cup, presented to the national champion.

Scalise also announced that a national search for a successor will begin immediately.
