College Squash Rewind (June 2015)

Northampton, MA — As the first month of summer concludes, let’s look back at the articles from June.

2015 NESCAC Men’s College Squash All-Conference Team Announced

Hadley, MA — Earlier this spring, the New England Small College Athletic Conference announced its 2014-2015 All-Conference men’s squash team.

Bates junior Ahmed Abdel Khalek earned his third consecutive Player of the Year honor. He went undefeated on the season and won the Men’s College Squash Association Individual Championship (Pool Trophy). He also helped the Bobcats to a season-ending national ranking of 13th.

Will McBrian (Colby College) took home the honor of Rookie of the Year. He went 10-7 on the season. McBrian is the first Colby player to be honored as Rookie of the Year.

Seniors Kevin Chen (Williams), Vrishab Kotian (Trinity), Karan Malik (Trinity), Andrew Ward (Bowdoin), Chris Wilkinson (Williams), and Miled Zarazua (Trinity) all concluded their collegiate careers by being named to the All-NESCAC squads. Zarazua was a four-time NESCAC Team member and the 2012 NESCAC Rookie of the Year.

Colby head coach Sakhi Khan was named the Coach of the Year. He guided the Mules to a season-ending national ranking of 21st. Khan is the first Colby coach to be honored with the NESCAC men’s Coach of the Year honors.

2015 Women’s College Squash Team Championships: Amherst and Colby #6s

Cambridge, MA — At the 2015 Women’s College Squash Association National Team Championships, Amherst College and Colby College met in the semifinals of the Walker Cup (C Division).

At the match at the #6 position, Taryn Clary (Amherst) faced Madeline Hunsicker (Colby). Clary came back from an 0-2 deficit to win the match in five games (6-11, 4-11, 11-6, 11-2, and 11-7).

Amherst captured the team match. They defeated Bowdoin to win the Walker Cup. The remainder of Colby’s tournament was cut short due to the blizzard.

Photos from the 2015 Women’s College Squash Team Championships: Middlebury and Bates #1s

Cambridge, MA — At the 2015 Women’s College Squash Association National Team Championships, Middlebury College and Bates College met in the Kurtz Cup (B Division) consolation semifinals.

At the match at the #1 position, Nessrine Ariffin (Bates) and Saskia Pownall-Gray (Middlebury) played. Ariffin won the match in three games (11-6, 11-4, and 11-4). Middlebury won the team match, 7-2. Due to the blizzard, this was the final match of the tournament for both squads.

2015 Women’s College Squash All-Ivy League Team Announced

Ivy LeaguePrinceton, NJ — The Ivy League announced its 2014-2015 all conference team earlier this spring.

For the fourth year in a row, Amanda Sobhy of Harvard was named Player of the Year. The Crimson senior concluded her collegiate career with four Ramsay Cups (individual titles), three team championships, and a 62-0 career record. She also won the 2015 Women’s College Squash Association’s Richey Award.

 

Princeton’s Olivia Fiechter was named the Rookie of the Year. She went 14-5 overall and 5-2 in Ivy League play. She was Princeton’s #1 player, and she helped the Tigers to a season-ending ranking of 3rd in the nation.

Four seniors earned All-Ivy honors: Nicole Bunyan  (Princeton University), Danielle Letourneau (Cornell University), Shihui Mao (Yale University), and Sobhy (Harvard University).

Mike Way, the Gregory Lee ’87 and Russell Ball ’88 Endowed Coach for Squash at Harvard University, was named coach of the year.

2015 Men’s College Squash Team Championships: Trinity and St. Lawrence #2s

Hartford, CT — At the 2015 Men’s College Squash Association National Team Championships, St. Lawrence University  faced Trinity College in the National Championship final (Potter Cup – A Division).

At the match at the #2 position, Edgar Zayas (St. Lawrence) faced Miled Zarazua (Trinity). The pair played a back-and-forth match, which Zayas captured in five games (9-11, 11-9, 11-6, 9-11, and 11-8. Trinity went on to capture the National Championship with a 7-2 victory.

Hartford, CT — At the 2015 Men’s College Squash Association National Team Championships, Princeton University and Drexel University met in the Hoehn Cup (B Division) semifinals.

At the match at the #9 position, Joseph Gingold (Drexel) and Ben Leizman (Princeton) played. Gingold won the match in four games (11-9, 6-11, 11-5, and 15-13). Princeton won the team match, 5-4, and advanced to the final where they defeated Dartmouth.

2015 Men’s College Squash All-Ivy League Team Announced

Ivy LeaguePrinceton, NJ — The Ivy League announced its 2014-2015 all-conference team earlier this spring.

Columbia senior Ramit Tandon put a bookend on his Ivy League career. As a freshman, he won Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors. As a senior, he became the first Columbia player to garner Player of the Year honors. Tandon also was presented with the 2015 Skillman Award.

Osama Khalifa, a Columbia freshman, was named the 2015 Rookie of the Year. He finished as the runner up in the Pool Trophy, the A Draw of the Men’s College Squash Association Individual Championship.

Columbia coach Jacques Swanepoel helped Columbia complete the Ivy League trifecta by being named Coach of the Year. He led the Lions to a final ranking of 4th in the nation, the program’s best finish ever.

In addition to Tandon, three other seniors were named to the All-Ivy team: Aditya Jagtap of Cornell, Samuel Kang of Princeton, and Tyler Osborne of Princeton.

2015 Women’s College Squash Team Championships: William Smith and Boston College #2s

Cambridge, MA — At the 2015 Women’s College Squash Association National Team Championships, William Smith and Boston College met in the quarterfinals of the Epps Cup (D Division).

At the match at the #2 position, Allison Rubin (William Smith) faced Alexis Ditomassi (Boston College). Rubin won the match in four games (8-11, 11-9, 11-5, and 11-9).

William Smith captured the team match. They defeated Mount Holyoke in the semifinals, before losing to Tufts in the final. Boston College defeated Georgetown before their tournament was cut short due to the blizzard.
