Navy: 2010 – 2011 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Annapolis, MD — The United States Naval Academy plays one of the busiest schedules in college squash. Last season, the Midshipmen played 34 matches, finishing with a 26-8 record.

Not surprisingly, one of the team’s goals is to stay fit to play competitive squash throughout the season. Last year, the Midshipmen had three tough matches at the Men’s National Team Championships: a 4-5 loss to F&M (improving on a 3-6 loss to the Diplomats the week before), and 6-3 wins over both St. Lawrence and Bowdoin. The majority of individual matches went beyond three games or had games going into extra points, so fitness and endurance were instrumental in the Midshipmen’s success.

The 2010-2011 Navy squad will need to draw on that work ethic as the three seniors who graduated (among them Nils Mattsson, a 2009-2010 All-American) played in the top four. Joining the varsity roster will be sophomore Clayton Young, who played junior varsity last season and should compete for a spot near the bottom of the ladder; first-year player Hunter Beck, a William Penn grad who was ranked as high as 17th U19 and should play in the Midshipmen’s top 3; and Emile Toscano, who played number 2 for Mercersburg and should play in the middle of the ladder at Navy.

Over the summer, all of the players participated in the Naval Academy’s summer training. According to coach Craig Dawson, that training ranged from Marines Corps Leatherneck to survival training on the Olympic Penisula, sailing Naval Academy training craft along the East Coast, training the new Plebe Class, and flying in helicopters and jet fighters off of aircraft carriers.

The Navy courts were busy over the summer as well. The Navy team has been involved with the Baltimore-based SquashWise urban squash enrichment program, and seven players from SquashWise, SquashSmarts, Street Squash and City Squash attended the Navy Squash Camp.

Looking ahead, the team is planning a training trip to San Fransisco in January, and plans are in development to build a doubles court at Navy.

Stanford: 2010 – 2011 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

Stanford, CA — As women’s college squash continues to grow, new teams are joining the ranks every year. Several new varsity programs have been launched in the last decade, and Stanford sets the gold standard for new teams. The Cardinal finished dead last in their first year of competitive play; eight seasons later, they finished 6th in the nation, a record-high finish for the program.

With all but one player returning, the Cardinal should be able to build on last year’s successes. Number 1 and 2009-2010 captain Katy Brewster has graduated, but number 2 Pamela Chua will have more experience under her belt after earning 2nd-Team All-American honors in her first season of collegiate play. Seniors Cecilia Haig and Samantha Buechner will be captains, and two first-year players — Serena Fagan of the Middlesex School and Julia Hemmendinger of the Bryn Mawr School — will be added to the roster as well.

Stanford has become a winter training destination for East Coast teams, so the Cardinal will get some respite from the road and host a few matches in January. They’ll open their season at Trinity in late November and swing back through the East Coast for more matches in January and again in February.

When they’re back in California, the Stanford players will be volunteering and mentoring students through Xtreme Squash, an urban squash/education program.

Colgate: 2010 – 2011 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Hamilton, NY — Colgate has quietly become one of the top five club teams in the nation. The Raiders had their best season ever in 2009-2010, finishing 30th overall at the Men’s National Team Championships.

And they accomplished this without their team at full strength. Senior Johnny Russell, who had played at the top of the ladder in the past, was out with an injury for most of the season. Junior Jamie Beddow, a seasoned player who competed in the middle of line-up, studied abroad last year. The losses of Russell and Beddow did not deter the Raiders, however. “The players welcomed the challenge of ‘playing up’ on the roster,” captain Gray Huffard explains.

That experience and attitude should come in handy this season. Beddow will be back on the team, but two key players — captain Steve Carey and Kyle Deombeleg — will be abroad during the fall semester. Even so, Colgate’s roster should grow. “There is a growing interest to play competitive squash which has greatly helped the development of our program over the past few years,” Huffard says. “We look forward to adding several first year players in addition to several other returning students to our roster.” The squad will also get the opportunity to work with squash pros in the Tri-State Area, which should only help the players’ improvement.

“Our 2009-2010 finish as #30 was the best yet for the program. This season we look forward to breaking into the #20 teams,” says Huffard.

Yale: 2010 – 2011 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

New Haven, CT — Dissatisfied with their performance the year before, a Yale squad comes out with all cylinders firing, wins the Ivy crown, and makes it to the finals of the national team championships.

Sound familiar? That’s how the 2009-2010 season played out for the Yale men, and if the Yale women have anything to say about it, 2010-2011 will be their turn — except they want to one-up the men and bring a national title back to New Haven.

According to head coach Dave Talbott, every match will be crucial for the Bulldogs as they had six losses last season. The 2009-2010 team remains almost completely intact, with only one player from the top 9 graduating. The loss of that player, 2010 Richey Award winner Alia Aziz, is significant, but the team will be gaining a strong first-year class: Lilly Fast, Kim Hay, Coco Seibert, Gwen Tilghman, and Millie Tomlinson. Tomlinson is the number 1 player U19 in Europe, and Hay is a member of the England’s junior national team.

Seniors Sarah Toomey, Caroline Reigeluth, and captain Logan Greer will provide leadership for the team, which includes the deep junior class of Lexi Van Arkel, Rhetta Nadas, Aly Kerr, Kelly Mulrow, and Cat Morris, and the sophomore class of Katie Harrison, Katie Ballaine, and Caroline Brown, who have years of squash experience. “This whole group give us strength at the top, some experience in the middle, and some needed depth at the bottom of the line-up,” says Talbott.

Assistant coaches Pam Saunders and Gareth Webber will also be back this season. Webber ran six weeks of squash camp at Yale over the summer with Saunders joining him for most of the sessions, and Mark Allen, Neil Harvey, and John White all participating in different weeks.

If the Brady Squash Center was busy over the summer, the players were even busier. Greer helped the US win the bronze medal at the World University Squash Games in Melbourne, Australia, and all of the players were either gaining work experience or advancing their studies, many of them working — and playing squash — overseas.

“Yale enters this year with specific goals and a lot of focus,” Talbott says.  “Everyone at Yale Squash is very excited about this season.”

Northwestern: 2010 – 2011 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Evanston, IL — Over the past few years, the Northwestern Wildcats have become a fixture in the Conroy Cup, usually finishing near the top of the “D” Division. They finished 28th in the nation last season, concluding the year with a winning record. Will this be the season the Wildcats crack the top 25?

One of the key matches for Northwestern will be with 24th-ranked Denison, the top team in the Midwest and second only to Stanford in the national club standings. When Northwestern and Denison faced off last season, the Big Red came away with a decisive 8-1 victory.

The one Wildcat to win against Denison, Jay Dalal, will be back at number 1. He will also be the team’s captain, taking over for Akhil Daswani, who graduated along with Eugene Kim and Diana Sands. Daswani and Kim played behind Dalal in the ladder, and Eitezaz Mahmood, a new member of the team, should fill in one of the top three spots. Continued improvement from all players will be a key to taking the team to the next level.

Vassar: 2010 – 2011 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

Poughkeepsie, NY — Vassar had a championship trifecta within reach last season: the Brewers won their second consecutive Liberty League crown and made it to the Seven Sisters and Walker Cup finals. Because there are currently only three varsity women’s teams competing in the Liberty League, there will be a round robin rather than a championship event this year. However, the Seven Sisters and Walker Cup championships are still up for grabs, and the Brewers have their sights on both.

The team has graduated four seniors: Olivia Mak, who played number 8 last season, and tri-captains Hope Blinkoff, Emilie Kraft, and Caitlin Ly, who all earned All-Liberty League honors, with Kraft being named Liberty League Player of the Year. Both Blinkoff and Ly have continued to be involved with squash post-graduation. Blinkoff has taken a position with SquashWise in Baltimore, and Ly, who will be attending law school in Boston, is volunteering at SquashBusters.

Though the team has lost four players, they will be gaining four more. Senior Elizabeth Anderson, who has played varsity tennis at Vassar for three years and has played squash recreationally, will be joining the squad. Sophomore Amanda Scott comes to the team with four years of varsity high school squash experience and should play in the middle of the ladder. First years Willow Thompson and Lisa Evans will also bring multiple years of squash experience with them and should add depth to the ladder.

The Brewers will be led by co-captains Nina Punukollu, a junior who played number 9 last season, and senior Kristine Bell, who played behind Kraft at number 2. Four of the six varsity returners earned league honors, with Meg Taylor being named to the Seven Sisters team and Bell, Alexa Lichtenstein, and Libby Pei receiving Liberty League honors. Pei was also named 2009-2010 Liberty League Rookie of the Year, and the Vassar coaching staff also received Liberty League recognition.

In addition to their successes on court last season, the Vassar players were involved with VAST Plus. VAST (Vassar After School Tutoring) is a program in which Vassar student tutor and mentor students from Poughkeepsie Middle School, and VAST Plus has an extracurricular component where students are introduced to a number of activities, including film making, digital photography, basketball, and squash.

Looking ahead to this season, the Vassar team has a number of goals. The team wants to develop fitness and technical skills in the preseason along with strategy and confidence throughout season, laying the foundation for their competitive goals. In particular, the team wants to reverse 5-4 losses to Wesleyan, Colby, and GWU, the team they faced in the 2010 Walker Cup finals.  Vassar also hopes to finish high enough in the national rankings to send two automatic entries to the Individual Championships at the end of the season.

How the team progresses towards these goals will depend on the strength of Vassar’s opponents and how their own returners and first-year players stack up, head coach Jane Parker acknowledges. “Nevertheless,” she says, “We have everything to play for and are excited to get going again in September.”

Bucknell: 2010 – 2011 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Lewisburg, PA — The Bucknell Bison have been making steady progress as they establish themselves as a club team.

After finishing third in the Emerging Teams Division in 2009, they fielded enough players to compete in the Hawthorn Cup (G Division), where they finished sixth. The Bison’s second trip to the Men’s National Team Championships included a 5-4 win over Notre Dame, an impressive feat since short-handed Bucknell had to forfeit the number 8 and 9 matches.

The Bison also expanded their schedule last year, competing in a number of regular season matches for the first time. They notched a key win over Bard, a varsity team, and had competitive matches with other teams from schools that traditionally compete in the Patriot League.

“We had no players graduate this past year and look forward to a strong freshman class,” says team captain and acting coach Kirk Bonner. “Our season goals are to finish the season with a winning record and be ranked in the top 50.” With a season of competitive play behind them, the Bison should be able to continue their improvement.

Georgetown: 2010 – 2011 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

Washington, DC — Georgetown started their 2009-2010 season with a bang. The club team, which is only a few years old, upset George Washington 5-4. GWU is a varsity program and had been ranked 15th in the nation before the season began; Georgetown came into the season ranked 28th.

The Hoyas followed up that win with an 8-1 win over Haverford, another varsity squad, and a 7-2 win over Northeastern. The Hoyas weren’t able to sustain their success over the course of the season, but they finished the season ranked 24th, the program’s strongest finish ever.

The Hoyas will return all but two of their players from last season, and club founder Kiran Gandhi, who played number 1 at the beginning of the season but then went abroad, will be back in the lineup. The team also expects to have several first-year players join once the academic year begins.

Georgetown is in a good position to defend last season’s finish as the top women’s club program in the nation.

Johns Hopkins: 2010 – 2011 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Baltimore, MD — The squash program at Johns Hopkins is starting to take off. Last winter, the Blue Jays sent teams to compete in both the men’s and women’s Emerging Teams Divisions at nationals for the first time.

All of the players on the men’s team will return this season. According to men’s captain Yen Theng Tan, several incoming first-year students have already expressed interest in joining the team. “From our previous roster of 6 regular players, we expect our roster to increase to 11 regular players for the upcoming season,” he says.

With more players, the Blue Jays may be able to move out of the Emerging Teams Division and compete in one of the nine-player divisions. Matches with Serues Cup  (“F” Division) and Hawthorn Cup (“G” Division) teams will help the Blue Jays figure out where they stand.

Members of the Hopkins squash program will also continue to volunteer with SquashWise, Baltimore’s urban squash enrichment program for middle-school students. The team trains at the Meadow Mill Athletic Club, where SquashWise is based, and the Hopkins players volunteer their time with the program every week.
