Baltimore, MD — The squash program at Johns Hopkins is starting to take off. Last winter, the Blue Jays sent teams to compete in both the men’s and women’s Emerging Teams Divisions at nationals for the first time.
All of the players on the men’s team will return this season. According to men’s captain Yen Theng Tan, several incoming first-year students have already expressed interest in joining the team. “From our previous roster of 6 regular players, we expect our roster to increase to 11 regular players for the upcoming season,” he says.
With more players, the Blue Jays may be able to move out of the Emerging Teams Division and compete in one of the nine-player divisions. Matches with Serues Cup (“F” Division) and Hawthorn Cup (“G” Division) teams will help the Blue Jays figure out where they stand.
Members of the Hopkins squash program will also continue to volunteer with SquashWise, Baltimore’s urban squash enrichment program for middle-school students. The team trains at the Meadow Mill Athletic Club, where SquashWise is based, and the Hopkins players volunteer their time with the program every week.
