2011 Men’s All-Ivy League Squash Team Announced

0

Princeton, NJ — In March, the Ivy League announced its 2010-2011 All-Conference team.

Princeton’s Todd Harrity was named the 2011 Player of the Year. Last season’s Rookie of the Year, Harrity followed up a strong freshman year with a dominant sophomore season. Harrity went undefeated not only in Ivy League play, but in all his matches this season. This included the 2011 Individual Championships. After making it to the finals last year, Harrity closed out his sophomore season by bringing the Pool Trophy to Princeton as the men’s national individual champion.

Nick Sachvie, a sophomore who transferred to Cornell this year, was named the 2011 Rookie of the Year. Playing number 1 for the Big Red, Sachvie went 5-1 in Ivy League play, falling only to Harrity in a competitive 1-3 loss. Sachvie had a strong debut at the men’s Individual Championships, making it all the way to the Pool Trophy finals.

Both Harrity and Sachvie were unanimous selections to the All-Ivy Team. Princeton senior David Letourneau, the 2011 Skillman Award winner, Yale sophomore Richard Dodd, and Harvard freshman Gary Power were also unanimous selections.

Five other players earned All-Ivy honors: Kenneth Chan (Yale), Alex Domenick (Cornell), Chris Hanson (Dartmouth), and Thomas Spettigue (Cornell).

Congratulations to all who earned 2010-2011 All-Ivy honors!

Hamilton Women Win 2011 College Squash Chaffee Award

Princeton, NJ — The 2011 Chaffee Award was presented to Hamilton College. The Chaffee Award, named for former Williams coach Clarence C. Chaffee, is given annually to a coach whose team has demonstrated the qualities of sportsmanship, teamwork, character, and improvement.

The Continentals were recognized for their spirit and sportsmanship by their peers. Each season coaches discuss with their teams which team they feel is deserving of this award. Coaches then vote on the award at the National Team Championships meeting, with each team getting one vote.

Hamilton finished the 2010-2011 season with a 13-10 record, ranked 18th in the nation. Most of their matches were won or lost by a wide margin; they swept seven of their opponents.

Hamilton’s closest match of the regular season was against Franklin & Marshall. The Continentals hosted the Diplomats at the Little Squash Center, and the visiting team came away with a 5-4 win.

The two teams met again in the Walker Cup (C Division) finals. Hamilton was riding a four-match winning streak, and it looked like they had a chance to win until the very end, when Franklin & Marshall pulled out another 5-4 win.

At the Walker Cup awards ceremony, the Hamilton players showed the same sportsmanship they had demonstrated all season long. Though the players were subdued at first, disappointed with the loss, they congratulated Franklin & Marshall and soon were laughing and taking pictures, celebrating their seniors’ final match.

The Continentals are coached by Jamie King, and Anne Edelstein was the captain. Edelstein finished her career with the most wins — 57 — of any Hamilton women’s squash player. Her fellow seniors, Danielle Forsyth and Leila Clifford-Ong, also helped set a high standard of play, effort, and sportsmanship.

This is the first time the Hamilton women have won the Chaffee Award. The Hamilton men won the Sloane Award, the men’s team sportsmanship award, in 2008 and 2010. When Hamilton won in 2008, King became the first individual to win the Sloane Award as a player and a coach, since he was a member of the Williams team that won the award in 1984.

2011 Women’s College Squash Video: Howe Cup – Yale and Harvard #1s

Princeton, NJ — The 2011 Women’s College Squash Team Championships were filled with exciting matches; however, the Howe Cup (“A” Division) final was a match for the ages.  It featured Yale and Harvard, the number one and two ranked teams in the country, who had just faced one another in the final match of the regular season.  In that match, Yale returned to New Haven with a 5-4 victory.

The Howe Cup final lived up to the hype.  Like the regular season contest, it went down to the wire. Yale won 5-4 to conclude an undefeated season, which featured the Ivy League title.

Below is video of the match between the #1s, Yale’s Logan Greer, the 2011 Richey Award winner, and Harvard’s Laura Gemmell. This match, a back-and-forth contest between two of the strongest players in the nation, epitomized the match between the two teams.

Hadley, MA — In March, the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) announced its 2010-2011 All-Conference squash team.

Trinity senior Randy Lim was named the 2011 Player of the Year. A four-time All-American, Lim had the finest season of his intercollegiate career, dropping only one match in team play as the Bantams won their fifth consecutive NESCAC championship and thirteenth consecutive national title.

First-year player John Steele of Wesleyan was selected as the 2011 Rookie of the Year. Playing number 1 for the Cardinals, Steele finished the season with a 19-6 record, the most individual wins for a Wesleyan player in over twelve years. Steele was also named a Harrow Sports College Squash Player of the Week in January.

Steele was the only Wesleyan player to earn First-Team All-Conference honors, but Lim was joined by fellow Trinity senior Parth Sharma and teammate Vikram Malhotra. The other players receiving First-Team honors were William Katz (Bates), Harry Smith (Colby), Valentin Quan (Middlebury), Alex Gross (Tufts), Will Gruner (Williams), and Will Morris (Williams). Aside from Steele, who is a freshman, all of the other players on the First Team had garnered All-Conference honors in the past. Gross, a senior, had been named to the First Team in each of the last three seasons.

Wesleyan head coach Shona Kerr was named 2011 Coach of the Year. The Cardinals came away from the season with their best record in ten seasons, playing a challenging schedule. Wesleyan was 20th in the 2010-2011 final national rankings, the program’s best result since the 2003-2004 season. Kerr also concluded her third and final year as the Women’s College Squash Association president.
