Hobart: 2018-2019 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

In the last five years, Hobart’s Men’s Squash team has zeroed in on the Conroy Cup championship three times.  Like the two other times prior, the Statesmen fell short of the championship again in 2018, finishing the year ranked 26th in the country.  Predicting where Hobart will end up in 2019 is a crapshoot given the changes that their roster will undertake. The top two players – All-Liberty League team members Josh Oakley and Quinn Udy – return, but that is where the similarities end.  Six of the top nine starting players were members of the Class of 2018, leaving gaping holes in the ladder.  Enter, the freshman class. Ten (10!) first-year players appear on Hobart’s new roster, and Head Coach Tim Riskie will have no choice but to rely on at least some of them to produce results right away.  Mohamed Abdelhafez and Michael Mulholland are the two highest ranked juniors of the group and could slot in among Oakley and Udy from the start of the season.  Riskie’s squad kicks off the year with three straight round robin competitions, hoping to gain some experience and confidence for his young group. The heart of the season pits Hobart against 2018 Conroy Cup Champion Bowdoin and similarly ranked Tufts, two tough match-ups that will be reveal the extent of the team’s growth.
