Hatfield, MA — For the week ending 1/22/2017, Yale’s Jenny Scherl and Rochester’s Ryosei Kobayashi have been named the women’s and men’s [hpow].

A [hpow] should have a significant impact on his or her team’s performance during the prior week and demonstrate sportsmanship. Coaches and Sports Information Directors may nominate players.

Jenny Scherl (Yale University): Sixth-ranked Yale traveled to California this week to face fifth-ranked Stanford. Down 3-4, Jenny Scherl, Yale’s #1, was down 1-2 in games to Stanford’s Casey Wong and trailed 3-8 in the fourth game. The Yale senior won the next eight points to force a game 5. In tie-breakers in the final game, Scherl earned the victory (9-11, 11-5, 8-11, 11-8, and 12-10), which let Yale’s Shiyuan Mao seal the 5-4 team victory for the Bulldogs.

Ryosei Kobayashi (University of Rochester): With 3rd-ranked Rochester hosting top-ranked Trinity, the team match was tied at 4-4. Ryosei Kobayashi, Rochester’s #1, found himself down 0-2 in games to Trinity’s Kush Kamar. The senior co-captain rallied to win the final three games to capture in individual (8-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-8, and 11-8) and team match for the Yellowjackets. On the week, Kobayashi also recorded victories over Cornell and Drexel.
