Northampton, MA — For the week ending 1/31/2016, Brown’s Purvi Goel and Navy’s Jack Herold have been named the women’s and men’s [hpow].

A [hpow] should have a significant impact on his or her team’s performance during the prior week and demonstrate sportsmanship. Coaches and Sports Information Directors may nominate players.

Purvi Goel (Brown University): On Saturday, Brown University, ranked 12th in the nation, faced 13th-ranked George Washington. In the match at the #8 position, Brown’s Purvi Goel faced George Washington’s Ginger Sands. Goel fell behind 0-2 in games, but rallied to capture the match in five games. (4-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-8, and 11-4). This match was crucial as it helped the Bears push the team match to 4-4. Brown’s Hannah Hay-Smith sealed the Bears’ 5-4 victory with a 3-0 victory at the #7 position.

Jack Herold (United States Naval Academy): With Brown and Navy tied at four matches apiece, the contest came down to the match at the #1 position. Navy’s Jack Herold faced Brown’s Thomas Blecher. After being tied 1-1 in games, Herold, a sophomore, won the final two games to earn the individual (11-3, 8-11, 13-11, and 12-10 ) and team victory. Herold also earned a five-game victory over Andrew Jung (9-11, 11-4, 11-3, 3-11, and 11-8) in Navy’s 4-5 loss to Middlebury.
