0

The CSA has released the final rankings of the first half of the season after teams concluded their last matches before exam periods and winter break.

The only movement in the top ten of the rankings occurred on the men’s side, where Princeton and Yale each move up one position to No. 7 and 8, respectively. The two teams each claimed 6-3 wins over Drexel, moving the Dragons down to No. 9.

On the women’s side, the rankings from No. 20-29 saw a shake-up. Colby and Hamilton each move up two positions to No. 22 and 25, respectively. Colby was propelled by its 7-2 upset over William Smith, while Hamilton defeated No. 26 Bowdoin.

The University of Virginia men continued their early season momentum with a jump from No. 17 to 14 based on their victory over former No. 13 Cornell. Farther down the men’s rankings, there was movement from 25-30, including Hamilton gaining two positions to No. 26 after an upset win over No. 27 Bowdoin.

Princeton No. 2 Adhitya Raghavan captured a 13-11, 11-9, 11-9 win against Drexel’s Bransten Ming on Saturday.

Teams finished a final set of matches prior to winter breaks with a light weekend of competition, December 8-10.

On Friday, Wesleyan split matches with Connecticut College—the Wesleyan women swept their matches 9-0, but the No. 30-ranked Connecticut College men upset No. 25 Wesleyan 6-3. The Camels men captured positions three through eight, losing only one game across the six matches.

Williams and Dartmouth faced off on Saturday. The Williams women, ranked No. 14, pushed the No. 10 ranked Dartmouth team by winning the top three positions. However, the depth of the Dartmouth squad proved to be the deciding factor as they won the remaining matches to capture the overall result 6-3. The Dartmouth men won their side of the match 9-0.

College play will resume the first week in January as teams return for the second half of the season, and fight for ranking positions leading into the team championships in February.

Weekend Wrap-up: Virginia Men Defeat Cornell

0
Virginia No. 8 Killian Bubrosky recovered from a two game deficit for a five-game win in the Cavalier’s 5-4 upset over Cornell

College players returned from Thanksgiving break for a flurry of competition as teams jockey for position in the first half of the season. Home field advantage was flipped on its head over the weekend, with many road teams claiming wins and upsets.

The University of Virginia traveled to Ithaca to take part in matches with Columbia and Cornell. The No. 17-ranked Virginia men pulled off the best win in the history of the program by upsetting No. 13 Cornell 5-4 on Saturday. Virginia’s success was driven by five-game wins from twin brothers Grayson and Killian Bubrosky at the No. 6 and 8 positions, respectively. The team result portends a bright future for the first-year varsity program.

The Yale men’s and women’s teams opened their seasons with a successful 2-0 road trip as they faced Drexel and Franklin & Marshall. The No. 9-ranked Yale men defeated No. 7 Drexel 6-3, a win that avenged a 5-4 loss in the 2017 nationals and that will likely place the Bulldogs back in the top eight of the rankings.

The St. Lawrence men—ranked No. 3—also began their season with a 2-0 road trip, defeating No. 8 Princeton 5-4 on Saturday and No. 5 Penn 6-3 on Sunday.

No. 29-ranked Vassar women’s team did take advantage of playing at home by capturing its most significant win in several years on Saturday, upsetting No. 23 Bates. Vassar’s depth drove the team’s success, as the team won the bottom five positions highlighted by a comeback from 2-1 down by No. 7 Emma Glickman.

The Dartmouth women and men defended their top-ten rankings by each going undefeated on the weekend, including wins against George Washington and Franklin & Marshall, as well as the Naval Academy for the men.

Capping the trend of success on the road was Tufts with men’s and women’s wins over home team Wesleyan. The men’s match was a significant upset relative to the rankings, with Tufts entering at No. 29 and Wesleyan at No. 25. The 7-2 match was punctuated by a tight match at the top position as Tufts’ Raghav Kumar took the fifth game 11-9.

College Squash Weekend Preview, December 1-3

0

Teams return from Thanksgiving break for a busy weekend of competition on the college squash calendar.

George Washington will face Dartmouth on Saturday with a potential place in the top 10 for both teams on the line. The Dartmouth men and women, each ranked No. 10, will aim to hold off the ambitions of George Washington, ranked No. 11 on the men’s side and 12 on the women’s. The Colonials women’s team last played Dartmouth at the 2017 team championships, where they lost a tight 6-3 match in which Dartmouth captured the bottom six positions. Rounding out its opening weekend of play for the season, Dartmouth will also play a men’s match against the Naval Academy on Saturday and face Franklin & Marshall on Sunday.

The University of Pennsylvania will host St. Lawrence in one of the premiere men’s matches through this point in the season. The No. 3-ranked St. Lawrence squad open their weekend against No. 8 Princeton before facing No. 5 Penn on Sunday. The road trip will be a challenging opening season test for a St. Lawrence squad which has made it at least as far as the national semifinals each of the last three seasons.

Yale and Drexel will open the weekend with matches on Friday. Both schools will alternate hoping for an upset, with the No. 9 Drexel women facing the No. 6 Yale squad, followed by the No. 9 Yale men looking to avenge their 5-4 team nationals loss from last season when they play No. 7 Drexel.

Tufts, featuring new head coach Joe Raho, will travel to Wesleyan as part of broader slate of matches between multiple teams at Wesleyan on Saturday. The No. 19-ranked Tufts women will aim to retain their position in matches against No. 20 William Smith and No. 21 Wesleyan.

Also on Saturday, Cornell will host the men’s and women’s teams from Columbia and the University of Virginia for a three-team round robin. It will make the first time Virginia has faced Cornell, a key test for the first-year varsity program. The women’s match between Columbia and Cornell promises to be close, with the teams ranked only one position apart at No. 7 and 8, respectively.
