Smith: 2011 – 2012 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

Northampton, MA — Though Smith lost their top two players from last season, expect the Pioneers to be stronger and deeper this season.

Several seniors will be back from study abroad and should have an immediate impact on the ladder. Clair Oblamski, Joanne Poon, and Jaimi Inskeep all came to squash with experience in other racquet sports, and Oblamski and Poon both played in the top two before they went abroad.

Two first year players, Jacqueline Zhou and Vivian Lee, should also help raise the standard of play on the team. They are expected to play in the top four, with Zhou vying for one of the top spots.

The other returners on the team all showed steady improvement at the end of last season, and they should all continue that growth this season. The Pioneers improved three spots in the final rankings last season over their 2009-2010 finish, and they have the potential to continue moving up the rankings this year.

2011 Men’s College Squash Video: Yale and Trinity #3s

0

Hartford, CT — In January, the Yale Bulldogs visited Trinity College for a much anticipated showdown between the number 2 and number 1 ranked men’s squash programs in the nation.

The two squads have become regular opponents with each of their meetings having very high stakes. At the 2010 and 2011 Men’s National Team Championship finals, the teams faced off. In both matches, Trinity escaped with a victory, including a dramatic win in last season’s championship.  With the match tied at 4-4, Trinity’s Chris Binnie defeated Yale’s Richard Dodd in front of a packed gallery of fans.

During the January meeting, Dodd and Trinity’s Andres Vargas played in the match at the number 3 position. Vargas captured the match in 4 games (11-9, 12-14, 11-6, and 12-10).  To say the match was long may be an understatement.  Below is video of game 4, which took over 25 minutes to play!

Johns Hopkins: 2011 – 2012 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Baltimore, MD — Johns Hopkins made a big move up the rankings last season. “Moving up over 20 places up the rankings last season, it’s only going to get tougher and our team is hungry for more,” says Yen Theng Tan, who does double duty as a player and coach for the student-run club team.

The Blue Jays finished 59th in 2010, their first year competing in the soft-ball era. The team vaulted up two divisions to finish sixth in the E Division, 38th overall. “Our program started in the winter of 2010 and is about 2 years old,” Tan notes. “Nonetheless, we are moving quickly towards becoming one of the more established club teams around.”

The team plans to have a more structured practice schedule this season and will continue to be actively involved with SquashWise, a Baltimore-based urban squash program.

Yale: 2011 – 2012 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

The Bulldogs will get their next shot at Trinity when they host the Bantams on January 18. While Trinity has lost many varsity players, Yale graduated only two of its top nine players. Three new players — Joseph Roberts, Huw Robinson, and Sam Shleifer —  will be joining the team. If Robert’s and Robinson’s names sound familiar, they should: they each have a brother on the team.

Irish national champion John Rooney will join the Yale coaching staff as assistant men’s and women’s coach, and Pam Saunders has  been elevated to associate head coach. The Yale facility has also had an upgrade with new lights, freshly sanded floors, and repainted courts and galleries.

Head coach Dave Talbott describes the men’s and women’s programs as “geared for hard work but also geared for fun and in the spirit of college athletics,” with a “solid perspective of what the whole experience should be.”

Four players from last season’s top nine have graduated, but six new players are expected to make an impact on the team. Jack Burgess of Brighton, England, is expected to play in the top three. First-year player Daniel Gun Ho of New Zealand will bring additional squash experience. Dustin Ma and Josh Boquist, who both picked up squash last year, are also expected to compete for spots in the top 10.

Washington’s season centers around two round robins: the Navy Round Robin in the fall and the West Coast Round Robin in the winter. But as the college squash scene expands in the Pacific Northwest, the Huskies may soon have more opportunities to play. “We are excited to have Oregon and Reed College (Portland) with teams this year,” says coach Mike Bishop. “Maybe we can drive to a match for the first time in our history!”

Denison University Squash Club Names Stephen Neal to Coaching Position

0

DenisonGranville, OH — The Denison University squash club has named Stephen Neal as its head coach.

Since 2002, Peter Burling has coached the Big Red. The squash club was not Burling’s fulltime position. Since 1991, he has been the head tennis coach for Denison, where he has led extremely successful men’s and women’s teams. According to Burling, “I have enjoyed much about college squash. But mostly the friendships I have formed.”

Neal brings a wealth of squash experience to Ohio. He has over twenty years of experience as a player and a coach.  “I am so happy to hand the squash reins over to Stephen Neal,” says Burling.  “He will certainly take Denison forward and upward. Stephen has a bastion of experience in squash, whereas I am a tennis coach who watched over the program for 9 years.”

Neal’s coaching resume includes  stops at many successful prep school squash programs (Milton Academy, the Westover School, and The Hill School). He also has college coaching experience, including work at Dartmouth and Wesleyan.  From 1999 – 2001, Neal coached the  Wesleyan men to 13-9 record.

Denison is part of a growing squash presence in the Midwest. The school has four international courts and it has been one of the most successful club programs since its inception in 1995.  Last season, Denison concluded the season ranked 28th in the nation.

Over the next few seasons, the College Squash Association hopes that successful club programs, like Denison, will begin the transition to varsity programs.
