Northampton, MA — The 2010 – 2011 college squash season continued this weekend with Navy’s second round robin and exciting matches in the Boston area.
All teams that competed this weekend MUST record their match scores as soon as possible in the US Squash Database. If scores are not reported, it is impossible to rank teams accurately, and penalties, including possible removal from the rankings, will occur.
Wellesley College, fresh off last season’s E Division Championship, has opened the season on a mission. The Blue earned wins against several teams that finished higher than the Blue in last season’s rankings. Ranked 30th in the preseason rankings, Wellesley defeated Boston College (#32), Smith College (#29), and Haverford (#31). The match with Smith College was an exciting 5-4 win. In the #3 ladder position match between Wellesley’s Dorothy Vickery and Smith’s Jasmine Wallas, the players battled back and forth for five games. In the final game, Vickery outlasted her opponent in tie-breakers (17-19, 11-4, 13-11, 10-12, 12-10). Smith also defeated Northeastern 6-3.
William Smith visited St. Lawrence on Saturday. William Smith defeated the Saints 7-2. Both squads also faced visiting Canadian teams Toronto and Queens.
In men’s action, Franklin & Marshall hosted Hobart in their season opener. For six of the Diplomats, it was their first college squash appearance. F&M won each match 3-0 for a shutout victory over the Statesmen.
Hobart also travelled to the Naval Academy’s second round robin of the season. The Midshipmen remained a perfect 9-0 with wins over Fordham, Denison, Northwestern, Washington, and Hobart. “We had another successful weekend of squash and although we defeated Hobart by a 9-0 score, it was by far the hardest opponent we’ve faced to date,” said Navy head coach Craig Dawson to NavySports.com.
Washington ended their East Coast visit with a 2-2 record. They defeated Drexel and Fordham, but lost to Johns Hopkins and Navy.
Johns Hopkins is back in college squash. Last season, the Blue Jays played in the five-man Emerging Team Division of the Men’s National Team Championships. So far this season, Johns Hopkins has won seven matches, including victories over Fordham and Washington this weekend.
In Boston, the Northeastern men hosted Bryant and Haverford. Both matches were captured by Northeastern by a score of 8-1. Haverford lost to Boston College, but defeated Bryant.
