Poughkeepsie, NY — Vassar’s goal for this season is simple: to get back into the game. The Brewers did not compete last season. Head coach Jane Parker explains: “Due to the graduation of six women in May 2013 and the study abroad commitments of the other returners, we had no choice but to field a co-ed team. The team competed in the CSA men’s program.” As the season progressed, some players joined the team and others returned from study abroad. Two players, Carly Scher and Isabelle Bertram, broke into the line-up of the men’s team and represented the school in intercollegiate play. “In the meantime we had enough women to field a team and so we played a few scrimmages in preparation for the 2014-15 season,” Parker explains. The Brewers now have their eyes to the future, and they’re looking forward to taking on squads like Haverford, William Smith, and St. Lawrence, as well as Seven Sisters competitors Mount Holyoke, Smith, and Wellesley. “It’s been two-three years since we’ve played these teams, so we’re curious to see how competitive we can be,” says Parker, who has many plans for the team this season, including a Women’s Squash Week celebration, an alumni match, and community squash coaching for children from the City of Poughkeepsie Middle School. “We are grateful to have the opportunity to compete as a women’s team again this year,” she says. “We are approaching this season with an open mind and look forward to putting in maximum effort to see how far we can go.”
