Representing Haverford College, G. Diehl Mateer, Jr., won the intercollegiate singles championship in 1948 and 1949. During his senior season, 1950, Mateer was faced with a challenge: compete for his third intercollegiate singles title or compete in the national doubles championship. He chose and won the 1950 doubles championship, which prevented Mateer from becoming the first three-time intercollegiate singles champion had he won.
After college, Mateer continued his phenomenal squash career. He won national singles championships in 1954, 1956, and 1960, and national doubles championships in 1949, 1950, 1951, 1953, 1954, 1958, 1959, 1961,1962, 1965, and 1966. During his singles career, his chief rival was Henri Salaun, a Wesleyan graduate. The two players were featured on the cover of the February 10, 1958 edition of Sports Illustrated.
