Baltimore, MD — Johns Hopkins made tremendous strides last season. Not only did the Blue Jays move up from the Emerging Teams Division to nine-player team competition, they made it to the E Division finals, where they lost 4-5 to Cal.
“This is our third year as a team, and we have made incredible progress each year,” says captain Sasha Guttentag. “We suspect it will be nothing less this season. We really hope to make an impression on the CSA as well as our respective university, to encourage them to make the team Varsity in the next 1-3 years.”
Guttentag has good reason to be optimistic. The Blue Jays did not graduate any players, and though a few players will be abroad in the fall, the team will be at full strength for Nationals. At least two new players are expected to compete in the top 6. Hopkins will also be playing an expanded schedule with matches distributed throughout the season, which should help foster players’ improvement. The Blue Jays could have a good shot at the E Division title, unless they leapfrog into the D Division.
