Northampton, MA — In a weekend where many matches were decided 9-0, several teams pulled off 5-4 upsets.
All teams that competed this weekend MUST record their match scores as soon as possible in the US Squash Database. If scores are not reported, it is impossible to rank teams accurately, and penalties, including possible removal from the rankings, will occur.
Bates and Middlebury traveled south for the Yale Round Robin, and both the men’s and women’s matches came down to the wire. After losing to Amherst last weekend, the Bates women pulled off an upset, defeating the Panthers 5-4. The 17th-ranked Middlebury men came back with an upset of their own, knocking off the 12th-ranked Bobcats 5-4. Both Middlebury squads went on to beat George Washington, and the Middlebury women defeated Mount Holyoke 7-2 and came within a match of upsetting Brown as well.
Many of the women’s matches over the weekend were decided by wide margins. Coming off a 6-3 win over Trinity earlier in the week, Yale swept Colby, F&M, Mount Holyoke, and Stanford. Mount Holyoke went on to sweep St. Lawrence and defeat Bowdoin 8-1. Eighth-ranked Dartmouth widened the gap between the “A” and “B” Divisions by sweeping ninth-ranked Williams. GW handed Tufts and Connecticut College 9-0 losses. Amherst blanked Tufts and Hamilton, while Hamilton beat Tufts 8-1. On Thursday, however, the Jumbos came away with a 5-4 win at Wellesley. Colby had a rough trip to New Haven with losses to Yale, Hamilton, and F&M, all higher ranked teams. But the Mules came through in a 5-4 win against Vassar in the Brewers’ first match of new semester. The Trinity-Penn match was fairly competitive as well; the Bantams won 6-3, but there were several four- and five-game matches.
In men’s club team action, Washington University in St. Louis, one of the CSA’s newest teams, had a busy weekend with matches against Notre Dame, Northwestern, Illinois Springfield, and Illinois Champaign. With only seven players, Washington went 3-1 on the weekend, losing only to Northwestern, the third-highest ranked club team in the nation. The Wildcats hosted the other Midwestern squads and didn’t drop an individual match in their four wins over the weekend.
As with the women, many men’s matches were decided 9-0. Among the teams who joined Northwestern in sweeping their opponents were Amherst (over Hamilton and Tufts), Bates (over Fordham), Colby (over Vassar), F&M (over Colby), George Washington (over Tufts and Conn), Wesleyan (over Fordham), and Yale (over Navy). Trinity, who preserved their winning streak with a 7-2 win over Yale on Wednesday, recorded 9-0 victories over F&M and Penn. Earlier in the week Brown also swept Amherst.
Amherst, currently ranked 19th, upset 18th-ranked Bowdoin 6-3. Hamilton, ranked 21st, held off 23rd-ranked Tufts with a 6-3 win of their own, and 22nd-ranked Wesleyan kept 25th-ranked Hobart from moving up the rankings with a 7-2 win. Yale preserved the “A” Division order by beating Rochester 7-2, and Dartmouth likewise kept Williams out of the “A” Division with another 7-2 win.
