Northampton, MA — In the long anticipated showdown between the number one and number two ranked women’s teams, Harvard visited Trinity on Sunday. It was the Crimson’s first official match since last semester. The team visited India during the first part of January. The number 1 match featured Trinity’s Pamela Hathway, the newly named top-ranked player in the nation, and Harvard’s Laura Gemmell, the 3rd-ranked player. Gemmell won the match in three games. Overall, Harvard won 7-2. Trinity’s two wins came from Nour Bahgat and Tehani Guruge.
Trinity’s men also faced Harvard. The Bantams shutout the 5th-ranked Crimson to extend their winning streak to 217 matches.
This weekend, Yale traveled to Princeton. The 4th-ranked Tigers were intent on defeating the 2nd-ranked Yale men. The match was extremely tight with five of the nine matches going to five games. The Bulldogs escaped with a 5-4 victory. Yale remains undefeated in Ivy League play.
Princeton’s women avenged the men’s loss. Princeton and Yale split the four five-game matches. Yale’s Alexandra Kerr and Princeton first-year student Casey Cortes battled in the number eight match. Kerr had three match balls; however, Cortes battled back and captured the match in 5 games. The 7th-ranked Tigers earned a 5-4 victory.
On Saturday, the annual “Little Three” squash tournament was held in Williamstown. This event is a competition between rivals Amherst College, Wesleyan University, and Williams College. It is considered the oldest conference rivalry in college athletics. Since 2001, Williams’ men and women have won the competition every year. Despite motivated play from Wesleyan and Amherst, the Ephs proved too much and shutout their opponents to earn the 2010 Little Three Championship. Amherst finished second. The Williams women also faced Stanford on Saturday. Stanford emerged with an 8-1 victory.
In Maine, 11th-ranked Mount Holyoke visited 12th-ranked Bates. The Bobcats defeated the Lyons 6-3. Mount Holyoke was more successful in the other part of their northern excursion, defeating Colby. Bates faces 10th-ranked Brown today.
On Friday and Saturday, Bates’ men earned victories over Columbia, MIT, Denison, and Stanford. The team faces Dartmouth and Brown today.
