Northeastern: 2009 – 2010 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

northeasternBoston, MA — Northeastern, last season’s 24th-ranked team, will attempt to move up the rankings this year.  Chris Reigeluth, a 2003 Colby graduate, will serve as the team’s new head coach.  At Colby, Reigeluth was a four year starter and served as captain.

The team will miss last season’s graduates: Chris Birkins, the program’s all-time wins leader, Taylor Yawney, and co-captains Clay Quarles and Darius Wilsey. Taking over for Quarles and Wilsey will be Christopher Pedro Souza and Buddy Scott.

Although the Huskies have big shoes to fill this season, the incoming players look promising.  All of these players have squash experience: Keith Sprout (Conestoga High School), Christopher Larue (Keene High School), Gentry Bain (Edina Senior High School), Daniel Hsu (Mercer Island Senior High School), and Jean Nieves (SquashBusters).

Northeastern has its sights set on regaining the title of top-ranked club team.  They last held this title in 2008. Last season, Denison earned the distinction.  With matches against a number of strong teams, including rivals Tufts, Hamilton, and MIT, the Huskies will be battle-tested going into the National Team Championships.

SquashBusters, a youth enrichment program for students in the 6th-12th grades, is located on the Northeastern campus.  Members of the Huskies volunteer their time coaching kids in the program.
