Northampton, MA — The Hamilton Round Robin, the George Washington Round Robin, the Little Three Championships, the Maine Event, and Smith College Invitational were just a few of the events of the college squash calendar this week.
This week’s play began with Brown traveling to Amherst Tuesday. The Bears made the most of their trip by winning both the men’s and women’s matches. Also on Tuesday, the Bowdoin men defeated Colby, 6-3.
The squash world was focused on the state of Connecticut on Wednesday. Connecticut College hosted Mount Holyoke. The Camels lost 3-6. In Hartford, Trinity hosted Yale. The Trinity men made the most of their home courts and defeated the Bulldogs 7-2. The women’s match came to a dramatic end. With the match tied at 4-4, the #1s played a five-game match that was ultimately won by Trinity.
Also on Wednesday, 6th-ranked Cornell hosted and defeated 5th-ranked Rochester, 6-3. Bates beat Bowdoin, 8-1.
On Friday, Brown made its second trip of the week to Western Massachusetts. In a rematch of last season’s Kurtz Cup final, the Brown women repeated their victory over Williams, winning 5-4. The Ephs men defeated Brown, 7-2. The Amherst men hosted Stanford and defeated the Cardinals 8-1. Friday was senior night for the Bates men. All of the Bobcats’ seniors got wins in their shutout of Boston College. Smith College played its home opener and defeated Cal.
Navy travelled to Connecticut on Friday. They shutout Conn College that night and lost to Yale, 0-9, on Saturday.
Middlebury hosted Columbia. The Panthers women defeated the Lions, 6-3, while the men lost to Columbia, 4-5.
On Saturday, Amherst, Wesleyan and Williams met in Williamstown for the annual Little Three Championship. The Ephs retained the men’s and women’s titles. The men defeated Wesleyan and Amherst by 8-1 scores, while the women blanked the Cardinals and Jeffs. For the women, Amherst came in second after defeating Wesleyan, 6-3. The Wesleyan men defeated the Jeffs, 6-3, to earn their second victory over Amherst in less then a week.
Smith College hosted an invitational over the weekend. Unlike most regular season events that are round robins, the Pioneers held a tournament with seven women’s teams competing: Cal, Conn College, Drexel, Smith, St. Lawrence, Virginia, and William Smith. Drexel cruised past Smith, 9-0, and Conn, 7-2. William Smith defeated Virginia, 7-2, and St. Lawrence, 5-4, to meet the Dragons in the finals. Drexel defeated the Herons to capture the tournament.
At their own round robin, the Hamilton men faced Franklin & Marshall and Drexel. The Continentals lost to F&M, but beat the Dragons, 5-4. Hobart also faced F&M. The Statesmen lost 0-9, but defeated Northeastern, 8-1. Drexel defeated Hobart, 7-2, Northeastern, 9-0, and Siena, 9-0. The Hamilton women shutout Rochester. After losing to Hamilton and F&M, Mount Holyoke closed out the weekend with a shutout of Northeastern.
Bowdoin had a successful weekend co-hosting the Maine Event. The Polar Bear men went 4-0 with victories over Tufts, BC, BU, and MIT. Not to be outdone, the Bowdoin women went 3-0 with victories over Tufts, BC, and Wellesley. Colby, the event’s co-host, also had success. The men beat Tufts, BC, and BU, while the women defeated Tufts, BC, and Wellesley. The Bates men defeated Conn College, 6-3.
The Trinity men visited Rochester and Cornell over the weekend. The Bantams escaped Rochester with a 5-4 victory and headed to Cornell. The Trinity women fell behind 1-4, but rebounded to defeated the Big Red, 5-4. The Trinity men defeated Cornell, 7-2.
Haverford hosted Vassar and Georgetown. The Fords men shutout the Brewers. The Haverford women lost to Georgetown, 1-8, and were edged by Vassar, 4-5.
George Washington hosted several teams in Washington DC. The men defeated Maryland and Johns Hopkins, while the women defeated Johns Hopkins and Bucknell. The Virginia men defeated Maryland.
Williams hosted Columbia on Sunday. Both Ephs squads defeated the Lions.
Coaches and Team Contacts, please remember to enter your team’s results in the US Squash Scoring System on the day of each match. Each player must be named in the results (“Not on Roster” entries will not be tolerated) or penalties may be applied.
Schools are reminded that to qualify for the National Team Championships, a minimum number of matches must be played at specific periods of the season:
- Varsity teams are required to play ten (10) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least 6 different opponents. Varsity teams should play the majority of their matches against other varsity schools.
- Club teams are required to play eight (8) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. In addition, club teams must play at least four (4) matches between January 1st and February 10th. At minimum, each team should have at least five (5) different opponents.
