CSA Publishes First Rankings Update of 2022-2023 Season

0

As teams prepare for the calendar to turn over to December and the end of the fall semester approaches, CSA has shared its first manual update to the team rankings. The club team rankings feature for the first time this season as well, with several teams logging at least three matches to open the season.

The biggest movement since the preseason rankings release came from the Columbia women, who fell four spots to No. 8 after an opening-season loss to Virginia. William Smith College also made waves in the women’s varsity rankings with two strong wins against Amherst and Williams, earning the No. 13 spot this week.

For the men, Dartmouth set the tone with a nice upset of Rochester to open the season, moving the Big Green into the Top 10. After earning a victory in the Men’s Match of Week 3, Franklin & Marshall flip-flops with Tufts into the No. 15 position.

The full set of rankings can be viewed here below, while fans should look for regular updates on the College Squash Team Rankings page all season.

Varsity Teams

  • The No. 4 Yale men beat No. 5 Virginia in the CSA Men’s Match of the Week at UVA this weekend. While Virginia took an early 2-0 lead, Yale won the next 5 matches to secure the win. The Yale men dug deep to pull off their first win of the season ultimately defeating Virginia 6-3.
  • The No. 8 Virginia women upset No. 4 Columbia in the CSA Women’s Match of the Week at UVA on Sunday afternoon. Columbia’s ladder has good depth and strength at the top making it a close battle but Virginia’s middle of the ladder secured the 5-4 win.
  • Congrats to the No. 3 Drexel Women and No. 2 Penn Men on winning the PA State Cup this weekend in Philadelphia at the Arlen Specter Center. The Drexel women took home their second consecutive Pennsylvania State Squash Championship defeating the No. 9 Penn women 7-2. While the No. 7 Drexel men took the lead after the first wave, the Quaker men beat the Dragons 7-2 in several close matches. The victory secured the Penn men’s fifth straight Pennsylvania State Squash Championship.

Matches of the Week

Men
#5 Virginia vs. #4 Yale
A huge Top-5 match-up headlines the men’s competition this weekend and should give fans a glimpse of two teams looking to break through this season. The result may come down to the contrast between Virginia’s strength at the top of their lineup and Yale’s seasoned depth.

Women
#8 Virginia vs. #4 Columbia
The Virginia women will look to replicate their hot start from last season, which included an upset of Columbia in New York City. This season, the Cavaliers are again ranked lower but hope to use home court advantage and another year of experience to support their upset bids.

Preseason Rankings, Week 1 Order of Play Released

0

The College Squash Association (CSA) published the preseason rankings for all women’s and men’s varsity teams on Thursday, setting the stage for the season to begin in earnest this weekend.

One main noticeable change right from the jump is that seven-time defending women’s team champion, Harvard, is not at the top of the standings as the season gets underway. Trinity College takes the top women’s spot thanks to a strong set of returning players coupled with an impressive incoming class.

On the men’s side, three-time defending team champion Harvard picks up where it left off last year, grabbing the No. 1 spot just ahead of University of Pennsylvania. Harvard may be the team to beat again this season, but the logjam of talented teams behind them will make for some very interesting matches along the road to the championship.

The full list of the preseason rankings can be found below and will be updated throughout the season on CSA’s College Squash Rankings page. This year’s preseason rankings were decided based on an algorithm which evaluates the Club Locker player ratings of the top players on each team and were confirmed by the CSA Rankings Committee.

With a full slate of matches scheduled for this weekend, including the first varsity match of the season between the men’s teams from Vassar College and Fordham University, the CSA also released the randomized order of play for the upcoming week:

Order of Play
The order of play for this week, Thursday Nov. 3 through Wednesday Nov. 9, is:

  • 3-court system: 2,3,1 / 5,6,4 / 9,8,7

  • Lynn Leong’s Yale squads finished the year in the Top 4 of both the men’s and women’s standings, a testament to the depth of talent and collective effort of each team.
  • Heading into this fall, the Yale women only graduated one player from their starting nine, which puts them on a path for continued success this season.
  • The men’s team, however, graduated their two headlining All-Americans Harrison Gill and Nadav Raziel in 2022. The rest of the lineup remains intact, but they will need to step up to fill the holes at the top of the ladder if they want to keep pace with last season’s result.
