Harvard Defeats Princeton in CSA Women’s Match of the Week

0

The Harvard women went head to head with Princeton in the CSA Women’s Match of the Week. Assistant Coach, Luke Hammond, comments on the intensity of this match and how they “are close and hard-fought every year”. Tied at 4-4, the match came down to the #4 position where Harvard clinched the 5-4 win.

“Our women have worked hard and have been improving individually and as a group throughout the season. We are incredibly proud of our women’s team’s performance this past weekend.  Everyone is showing a team-first mentality” Hammond goes on to share.

The Harvard women sit at 6-1 and will look to keep this momentum heading into the final stretch of the season where they face Cornell, Columbia, Tufts and Drexel.

Penn Defeats Harvard in CSA Men’s Match of the Week

0

The Penn Squash Center was packed on Sunday afternoon for the highly anticipated showdown between the No. 2 Penn and No. 4 Harvard men. The last 2 times these teams met resulted in lengthy 5-4 matches in which Penn fell short. This year, in the CSA Men’s Match of the Week, Penn came out on top with a confident 7-2 win. The win marks Penn’s 11th undefeated match.

Head Coach, Gilly Lane shares “It was a positive step for the team. Harvard is a great team and incredibly well coached and knows how to come through big matches. I thought our boys played the big points well and managed their emotions in those moments”.

While Penn is riding on this victory, Gilly is prepared for Harvard to come back stronger “and I have no doubt that they will be determined to reverse the weekend’s results”. The team will use this win as motivation heading into the rest of the season where we will see them take on Yale, Trinity and Princeton.

CSA Updates Team Rankings Using ELO

0

The College Squash Association (CSA) is excited to announce updated team rankings, which account for all match results recorded through January 23, 2024.

Notably, this week’s ranking update marks the first full implementation of the CSA’s ELO-based algorithm for team rankings, which is an objective tool that calculates standings based on head-to-head matchups and results against common opponents.

After several weeks of careful observation and accumulating match results, the CSA Rankings Committee has determined that the algorithm now possesses sufficient data to reliably underpin the national college team rankings. Therefore, the changes in this week’s rankings reflect recent key match outcomes as well as this adjustment to ELO methodology.

Key to the ELO algorithm is its comprehensive analysis of all team matches played during the season, forming an intricate network of results linked through common opponents. The coming weeks, packed with crucial matchups, will further enrich the algorithm’s dataset, enhancing the objectivity and precision of the rankings. It’s important to note that the proximity of teams in the rankings further influences the impact of a result on team standings.

To keep you fully informed and part of the excitement of the season as we approach the Team Championships, the CSA will be providing weekly ranking updates every Wednesday for the remainder of the season. These updates will reflect the results from the previous week’s matches. This regular insight will offer a clear view of how teams are shaping up and who’s gaining momentum as we head into the Championship events.

The latest rankings are available below, and continuous updates can be found on the College Squash Team Rankings page.

Trinity Men and Women TakeDown Harvard with a Dual Match Sweep in CSA Match of the Week

0

The CSA Match of the Week did not disappoint. The Trinity men and women both upset Harvard 6-3 marking the first dual match sweep since 2008.

These wins were carried with extra passion after Trinity’s valiant effort last season where they came up just short to Harvard in the Potter Cup and Howe Cup finals.

The men’s match saw several matches lasting over an hour, including three five-game battles. The 6-3 victory marked the first win over Harvard since 2018 and it was certainly not an easy feat. “At 4-1 up, Harvard showed great resilience and made it hard for us to clinch the 5th point. All credit to their team and coaches” Men’s Head Coach Moustafa Hamada comments. Hamada is “proud of the team for pulling through this time” and looks to “build on this win and keep getting stronger”.

Simultaneously, the Trinity women fought through Harvard’s top nine with two lengthy 5-game matches. The women started off strong sweeping the first round of matches. The momentum did not stop there. With fans surrounding the courts, Trinity secured the 6-3 win. “The team played well, but this is still the beginning of the second half of the season. Our team needs to keep getting stronger and stronger to compete against some tough opponents in our upcoming matches” Women’s Head Coach Wendy Bartlett reflects.

The teams are just gearing up for a heavy month of matches before the championships. While this win demonstrates their strength, they still have to face Cornell, Columbia, Princeton, Penn, Yale and Drexel. While Trinity men and women remain undefeated, anything is fair game in these high profile matches.

Match of the Week

MenNo. 4 Trinity vs. No. 2 Harvard

WomenNo. 2 Trinity vs. No. 1 Harvard

On Sunday afternoon, both the Trinity men and women will face their fiercest opponent, Harvard, in the CSA Match of the Week. This is a highly anticipated match after these teams last met at the Howe and Potter Cup finals in 2023. In the Potter Cup, the Trinity men’s team, entering as the sixth seed, had a difficult path to the finals. They won their quarterfinal match 5-3 and their semifinal match 5-4, which set up a showdown with the top-seeded Harvard team. The final was a close fought contest, with Trinity putting up a strong fight but ultimately succumbing to Harvard in a tense 5-4 finish. This year, Trinity, bolstered by new energy and determination, is eager to reverse the outcome. Yet, Harvard is known for their resilience and consistency in such crucial matches, maintaining a strong and steady performance.

The Harvard and Trinity women will continue their battle for the No. 1 ranking. Last year, the Trinity women took down Harvard ending their 102-match winning streak during the regular season. However, in the 2023 Howe Cup finals, Harvard came back to take what was theirs. With grit, strength and stillness Harvard defeated the top-seeded Trinity women to reclaim their status as the No. 1 ranked team for the eighth year in a row. Who will take home the win this season?
