Earlier this week, the College Squash Association (CSA) updated its rankings in preparation for conference championship events this weekend. This is the first week that CSA has fully employed its ELO-based rankings algorithm, an objective tool which computes rankings based on head-to-head match-ups and common opponents.
The CSA Rankings Committee has been monitoring the ELO rankings for the last few weeks while teams recorded new match results, which are the data points for the algorithm. Some minor changes appearing in this week’s rankings are due to the adjustment from manual rankings changes to this computational version.
CSA’s ELO-based algorithm takes into account all matches that have been played up to that point in the season. The process creates a “spider web” of match results where team results are connected through common opponents. The closer the teams are in the rankings, the more meaningful their results are for sorting the standings.
The final team rankings will be computed before the National Collegiate Team Championships – Women’s on February 17-19 and Men’s on February 24-26 – after all of the regular season team results are completed. Only then will the full rankings picture be complete.
