St. Lawrence: 2018-2019 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Last season, St. Lawrence Men’s Squash battled through an injury-plagued season to still finish ranked 4th in the country and to win their fifth straight Liberty League championships.  Many figured 2018 was their year to compete for the National Championship, but it was not to be.  Now the Saints face a great deal of uncertainty heading into the 2018-2019 season.  Foremost in most minds is who lead St. Lawrence as their head coach this season.  Decorated head coach Chris Abplanalp shifted over to growing NESCAC program Colby College in early October, leaving St. Lawrence with an important vacancy.  There are critical holes in the ladder as well, with four-time All-American brothers Ahmed and Moustafa Bayoumy both graduating along with two other senior teammates, and some ambiguity around the bottom portion of the ladder. Abplanalp did recruit three freshmen to St. Lawrence before departing, but all three will need to adjust to college play under an interim coach and an uncertain situation.  The Saints will still have quite a bit of talent on their roster, but the players are going to have to mesh well and find internal leadership quickly in order to prepare for some very tough competition.  Liberty League foe Rochester as well as Penn and Dartmouth will all be trying to chase down and surpass St. Lawrence in the rankings.
