Cornell Names David Palmer as Head Squash Coach

Cornell UniversityIthaca, NY — Cornell University has named David Palmer as its new head men’s and women’s squash coach.

Palmer, the new James Broadhead `57 Head Coach of Squash, takes over the men’s program from Mark Devoy and women’s program from Julee Devoy. According to the Daily Squash Report, the Devoys left Cornell in August after twelve seasons due to family medical issues.

Andy Noel, Cornell’s Meakem*Smith Director of Athletics and Physical Education, says, “We could not be more pleased with the addition of David Palmer as our new coach. We may be entering an exceedingly exciting era in Big Red squash with a player and coach of David’s stature.”

Palmer, who was a top Professional Squash Association player for fifteen years, is the latest former professional player to join the College Squash Association coaching circles. Of the PSA alums from the 1990s and 2000s currently coaching in the CSA include Martin Heath (Rochester), Gavin Jones (Franklin & Marshall), Thierry Lincou (MIT), John White (Drexel), and Hansi Wiens (Dartmouth). In total, Palmer captured 27 PSA events, including being ranked #1 in the world twice (2001 – 2002 and 2006). A native of Australia, Palmer has also represented his country in squash competitions. He captured seven Commonwealth Game medals.

Last season, the Cornell women played in the Howe Cup (A Division) and concluded the season ranked 7th in the nation. The Big Red men finished the season ranked 10th, losing in the finals of the Hoehn Cup (B Division).

With the Ivy League season starting in November, Palmer will jump right into competition with the Cornell squads.
