2016 – 2017 Intercollegiate Doubles Championships Results

ussquashdoublesPhiladelphia, PA — The 2016 – 2017 Intercollegiate Doubles Championships were held this weekend at the Racquet Club of Philadelphia, the Germantown Cricket Club, and the Philadelphia Cricket Club

The intercollegiate doubles championships, which were restarted in 1988 with help from Keen Butcher and Rusty Ball, celebrated their twenty-ninth consecutive men’s tournament, sixth year of women’s competition, and fifth year of mixed doubles competition.

The women’s draw had four squads. Princeton’s Maria Elena Ubina, who won the title the past two seasons with teammate Olivia Fiechter, paired with Alexandra Toth this season. The new pair went 3-0 in round robin play. Overall, Ubina has won four consecutive intercollegiate doubles championships with three different partners.

In mixed doubles play, Penn’s George Lemmon, half of last year’s winning pair, partnered with newcomer Jessica Davis. They met Franklin & Marshall’s Fiona Murphy and Samm Fulton in the finals. In a five-game match, Penn claimed the title (13-15, 14-15, 15-10, 15-4, and 15-8).

The Naval Academy has focused on the doubles event the past few seasons. In fact, the Midshipmen have claimed the doubles event two of the past three seasons. Navy’s Jack Herold and Randall Beck went into this year’s event as the top seed. They meet Penn’s Lemmon and Hayes Murphy in the final of the Butcher Ball Cup. Navy captured their third title in four seasons with a five-game victory over Penn (10-15, 15-12, 15-13, 12-15, and 15-8).
