2016 Men’s National Team Championships: Summers Cup Final

New Haven, CT — Bates College defeated Williams College to win the Summers Cup and the C Division title.

Bates and Williams had already met this season, on January 9th. The Bobcats won that match, 6-3.

In today’s final, Bates took the early lead, winning in four games at number 3 and in three at number 6. Williams got on the board with a come-from-behind four-game win at number 9.

In the second round, Williams won the first game at both number 8 and number 5. Then Bates stepped on the gas, winning in four in both matches. The Bobcats now had the title within reach. Leading 2-0 at number 2, it looked like they had the match in the bag, but Williams did not go down easily, pushing the third game to extra points.

The Ephs could slow the Bobcats but not stop them. A 13-11 win in the third at number 2 gave the Bobcats the Summers Cup.

The final score was Bates 7, Williams 2, as the Bobcats improved upon their performance from earlier in the season.

This is Bates’ first Summers Cup and the team’s first division title since 2008.

This win also marked the school’s second C Division crown of the day; the Bates women won the Walker Cup earlier in the afternoon.
