Princeton, NJ — Brown University was named the winner of the 2014 Chaffee Award.

The award, which is named for former Williams coach Clarence C. Chaffee, has been presented  annually since 1987 to the coach whose team best demonstrates the qualities of sportsmanship, teamwork, character, and improvement. Coaches discuss with their teams which team they feel is deserving of this award. Coaches then vote on the award at the National Team Championships, with each team getting one vote. This year’s award was presented at the 2014 Women’s National Team Championships, which were hosted by Princeton University.

The award was presented to Brown head coach Stuart le Gassick along with former assistant coach Chris Sachvie (the new coach of Dickinson College) and senior captains Dori Rahbar and Sarah Domenick.

The Bears regular season was highlighted by three 5-4 victories against Bates, Middlebury, and Stanford. These wins put the Bears as the second seed in the Kurtz Cup (B Division) at the 2014 Women’s National Team Championships.

In the opening round of the Team Championships, Brown defeated Williams, but lost 4-5 to George Washington in the semifinals. The squad rebounded by defeating Bates, 5-4, to conclude the season.

This marked the third time Brown University and le Gassick have been recognized with the Chaffee Award. They previously won the Chaffee Award in 1997 and 2001.
