Bates: 2013 – 2014 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

Bates College Lewiston, ME — Bates saved the best for last during the 2012-2013 season, going on quite the run at the Women’s National Team Championships. The Bobcats were seeded fifteenth coming into the tournament, and they bounced tenth-seeded Williams in the first round with a 5-4 win. They followed that victory with another upset, this time over eleventh-seeded Middlebury, before falling to Dartmouth in the Kurtz Cup finals. Despite the loss of two players to graduation, the returners are long on experience, with two seniors and five juniors back from last year’s line-up from championships. In addition to the veterans, newcomers Emma Dunn (Pomfret) and Charlotte Cabot (Middlesex) are expected to start, and Hannah Cooper (Harriton Senior High School) and Lauren Goldman (Kingswood-Oxford) will also be in the mix. “The Bobcats will dedicate the 2013-2014 season to former head coach and co-founder of the Bates Squash Programs, Herb Bunker, who passed away in the spring,” says head coach Pat Cosquer. Cosquer also reports that audio and visual upgrades to the facility are in the works this fall, and that Bates will be hosting the 3rd Annual Bobcat Classic Professional and Amateur Squash Tournament on September 27-28, which will feature former world #1s Thierry Lincou and David Palmer and an amateur draw that will include adults, juniors and college players from around the world.
