California Berkeley: 2013 – 2014 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

California Berkeley, University of Berkeley, CA — Cal’s goals for this season focus on growing the program. Co-captain Kimberly Lin outlines four goals for the team: increasing the team’s presence and awareness in the community; growing the club program through recruitment; attending more CSA-affiliated tournaments; and fundraising and finding a steady funding source for the team. “We are very cohesive, ambitious and hardworking towards making the squash program in Cal more prominent,” says Lin. “We are also very diverse with students from over five countries.” One of the team’s plans for the season is to host a fundraising tournament for the community with clubs in the Berkeley area. While the team did lose its top four players, seniors Ann Huang and Mindy Huynh will be joining the team. Cal has identified Smith as a key opponent for this season. “We were pretty equal in skill level [last season], and if we defeat them this year it could be an indication of our progress,” says Lin. The two teams played three times last year, with Smith winning 6-3 each time. Due to graduation losses and study abroad, both teams will have to field teams with new players, and they may be in for another set of close matches this season.
