Haverford Men Win 2013 Men’s College Squash Barnaby Award

New Haven, CT — Haverford College won the 2013 Men’s College Squash Association Barnaby Award.

First presented in 1983, the Barnaby Award recognizes the most improved team in men’s college squash. Coaches vote on the award at the Men’s National Team Championships. This year’s award was announced on the final day of the 2013 Men’s National Team Championships, which were hosted by Yale University.

The award is named for Jack Barnaby, who coached the Harvard men for decades and later coached the Harvard women. Harvard struggled during the first few years of Barnaby’s tenure, but the Crimson ultimately became a national powerhouse under his leadership, winning national title after national title. By the time he retired from coaching the men’s team in 1976, Barnaby had compiled a 355-95 lifetime record. His team capped his final season with a national title, going undefeated.

During the 2011-2012 season, Haverford went 6-13 and finished 41st in the nation, winning the 2012 Serues Cup (F Division title). The Fords opened the 2012-2013 season with a 9-0 win over Fordham and didn’t look back, powering to a much-improved 9-8 record. Haverford jumped to the D Division at the Men’s National Team Championships and finished the season ranked 32nd in the nation. This was the Fords’ best finish since the 2006-2007 season, when they finished 29th in the country.

Haverford is led by head coach Niki ClementAndy McComas and Charlie Michele were the 2012-2013 co-captains.

This is the first time in program history that Haverford has won the Barnaby Award.
