New Haven, CT — Western Ontario won the Hoehn Cup, Middlebury won the Summers Cup, and NYU won the Serues Cup.
B Division (Hoehn Cup): The Western Ontario Mustangs faced Williams in the finals, who had advanced to the final with 6-3 wins over both Bates and Columbia. Western Ontario had defeated Penn 8-1 in the first round and Dartmouth 5-4 in the second round. The match was quite competitive, as only three individual matches were decided in three games. Four of the matches went to four games, including Julian Dobretsky’s win for the Ephs at number 4 over Tashlin Reddy; three of the four games in that match went to tie-breakers. There were also two five-game matches: Yeshale Chetty (Western) versus Alec Greaves-Tunnell (Williams) at number 4, and Brian Hong (Western) versus Nick Marks (Williams) at number 2. Chetty and Hong both won their matches, and the Mustangs ended up winning 7-2 overall. This was Western Ontario’s third Hoehn Cup victory; they also won in 2009 and 2011.
C Division (Summers Cup): Most of the Summers Cup matches took place at Wesleyan University, one of the satellite hosts of the 2013 Men’s National Team Championships. The final, however, was held at Yale, and Middlebury played Wesleyan for the Summers Cup. Middlebury had advanced to the final with wins over Connecticut College and Bowdoin, while Wesleyan’s path to the final had gone through Drexel and George Washington. The Panthers clinched the title early, but Wesleyan won the last match on court, the number 1 contest between John Steele (Wesleyan) and Jay Dolan (Middlebury). In the end, the final score was 7 for Middlebury and 2 for Wesleyan. The Summers Cup was the final trophy to be presented of the 2013 Men’s National Team Championships. This is Middlebury’s third Summers Cup; they won back-to-back C Division titles in 2009 and 2010.
F Division (Serues Cup): New York University left no doubt that they were top team in the 2013 Serues Cup. They faced Lehigh in the final, a team that had earned their spot in the title match with a dramatic 5-4 win over Northwestern in the semifinals. NYU had had a challenging semifinal as well, outlasting Northeastern 5-4. In the Serues Cup final, NYU went out to a lead in the first flight of matches. They clinched the title in the second flight, which they also swept. The final match score was NYU 9, Lehigh 0. Six of the matches were decided in three games, but the number 2 match between NYU’s Aditya Kochhar and Lehigh’s Will Addis went to four games, as did the number 9 match between NYU’s John Moltz and Lehigh’s Foster Rankin. The number 4 match between Alex Bakes of NYU and Nick Barr of Lehigh was the closest contest of the final. Bakes won the first game, but Barr came back to win the next two. Bakes recovered to win the fourth, and he outlasted Barr 13-11 in the fifth and final game. NYU has never won the Serues Cup before.
