Vassar: 2012 – 2013 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

Poughkeepsie, NY — Vassar has been in the midst of a rebuilding cycle that will continue into the next season. A few years ago, the Brewers were competing in the Walker Cup (C Division) final at the Women’s National Team Championships, and before Mount Holyoke went on their recent run, Vassar dominated the annual Seven Sisters tournament. Last season, the Brewers finished third in the D Division, and this year their goal is to make it back into the C Division. The team has lost four players, including two (Meg Taylor and Nina Punukollu) from the top three, but they will be gaining at least one first-year player, Catherine Tween, who is expected to play in the middle three. Also benefitting the team will be the return of Avery Siciliano from study abroad. Siciliano, who played in the middle of the order before going abroad, will co-captain the team with Jill Levine. This year’s squad can expect to focus on fitness. “The team plans to work harder at conditioning in order to improve their ranking this year,” explains head coach Jane Parker. Given that many teams in the mid-to-upper twenties have players who are new to squash, fitness can give a team an edge, and for Vassar, that may make the difference between competing for the Walker and Epps Cups.
