Philadelphia, PA — When Penn senior tri-captains Nabilla Ariffin, Pia Trikha, and Steph Vogel were first-year players, the Quakers made it to the Howe Cup finals, where they lost 3-6 to Harvard. That Penn team featured a deep, diverse first-year class anchored by a core group of senior players. Penn hasn’t been back to the Howe Cup final, but this year’s squad has a similar make-up as the 2009-2010 squad that competed for the national title. No players graduated last season, and only one player from the top nine graduated the year before. Five of the top six players from last year’s team will be seniors, and this is their year to put all of that experience into play. The Quakers also have a large first-year class who come from around the country and the world. Three new players come from abroad — Ailsa Agnew (Toronto, Canada), Haidi Lala (Cairo, Egypt), and Yan Xin Tan (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia) — and three come from the US: Carey Celata (Philadelphia, PA), Camille Lanier (Washington, DC), and Samy Lanka (Seattle, WA). The Quakers’ goal for this year is to improve upon last season’s fifth-place finish at the Women’s National Team Championships, and they have the combination of experience and new talent to take them far.
