Northampton, MA — For the week ending 2/12/2012, Harvard’s Haley Mendez and St. Lawrence’s Kyle Ogilvy have been named the women’s and men’s [hpow].

A Harrow Sports College Squash Player of the Week should have a significant impact on his or her team’s performance during the prior week and demonstrate sportsmanship.

There were a number of deserving candidates this week. Yale’s Robert Berner won a five-game match against Harvard to help the Bulldogs to a 5-4 victory. Franklin & Marshall was tied at 4-4 with George Washington when the Diplomats’ Halley Cruice came back from 1-2 to win her match 3-2 and claim the team victory.

Haley Mendez (Harvard University): Harvard visited Yale on Sunday to decide the Ivy League title. Both squads were undefeated going into the match. Yale was up 4-4, Mendez faced Yale’s #4 Alexandra Van Arkel.  The first-year student stepped up to the pressure and won the match in three close games (11-5, 12-10, 12-10). Harvard will enter the Howe Cup as the top-ranked team with a 15-0 regular season record.

Kyle Ogilvy (St. Lawrence): St. Lawrence’s final two matches of the regular season against Williams and Middlebury were crucial for the seeding of the Hoehn Cup (“B” division) of the Men’s College Squash Association National Team Championships.  Ogilvy, a first-year student, played two tight matches against the Ephs and Panthers.  In the Middlbury victory, he defeated Jay Dolan in four games  at the #2 position (6-11, 11-9, 11-9, and 12-10).
