Northampton, MA — For the week ending 1/8/2012, Bates’ Cheri-Ann Parris and Navy’s Andrew McGuinness have been named the women’s and men’s [hpow].

As the college squash season returned from the semester break last weekend, college squash activity was concentrated in the great state of Maine.

Cheri-Ann Parris (Bates College):  On Sunday, Williams visited Bates. The Ephs and the Bobcats have played since 1986. In that time period, Williams was a perfect 23-0. Parris helped lead her team to a 7-2 victory over 9th-ranked Williams. Playing at the #2 position, Parris defeated Courtney Bogle in four games (9-11, 11-9, 11-5, and 11-9). According to Pat Cosquer, the Bates coach, Parris, the Bobcats’ captain, is an “inspirational and passionate leader, who leads by example. She’s the reason we are and will be successful.”

Andrew McGuinness (United States Naval Academy): McGuinness, a first-year player and Navy’s #1, has had an impressive start to his college squash career.  Before playing his first intercollegiate singles match, he won the Naval Academy’s Barb Tournament. McGuinness and the Midshipmen made the most of their trip to Maine. They went 3-0 with victories over Bates, Bowdoin, and Colby. Through this weekend, McGuinness is 11-3. During the Maine trip, he beat Bates’ Bobby Burns, 3-1, Bowdoin’s Andrew Hilboldt,  3-0, and Colby’s Harry Smith, 3-1.
