Rochester: 2011 – 2012 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

Rochester, NY — The defending Liberty League champions will start the season down four players from last season’s top 5. Will Newnham, who played number 2, has graduated, as has three-year captain Hameed Ahmed, who played number 5. Ahmed will still be with the team, taking over for Chris Fennell as assistant coach.

The Yellowjackets’ number 1 and number 4 from last season — Beni Fischer and Joe Chapman — will both be studying abroad during the fall semester. Expect the team to be stronger when both return for the second semester.

The team will have two new faces on the roster. Egypt’s Mohamed Abdel Maksoud, who reached the semifinals of the US Junior Open in 2010, is expected to play in the top 6. Also joining the team will be Raymond Moore, who is an alum of the StreetSquash program in New York City.

“It’s a rebuilding phase for us,” head coach Martin Heath explains. “There are great opportunities for US kids to play on our team.  We are proud of our internationality and diversity, though we invite more US student-athletes to be part of our squad.”

“It’s not over until ‘the streak’ is broken!” Heath adds.
