Washington University in St. Louis: 2011 – 2012 Men’s College Squash Season Preview

St. Louis, MO — Debut seasons don’t get much better than this. Washington University in St. Louis went 8-1 and took home the Hawthorn Cup in their first trip to the Men’s National Team Championships.

The team has been busy sharing its successes with others. The Bears are working to start a women’s team as well as build interest in squash at Wash U through intramural play. The team also plans to help St. Louis University develop a team.

The floors of the Wash U courts have been redone, and the team will already have an East Coast trip under their belts by the time Nationals come around since they’ll be traveling to the Navy Round Robin. Only one player will not be returning to the team, and the three first-year players and one sophomore returning from injury all bring prep school squash experience with them.

“This club has lots of potential,” says club president Lucas Shapiro. “Students come to Wash U for the academics and then have the opportunity to play squash competitively, but not so much so that focus is lost on school work and the college experience.”

“This team is full of camaraderie and self-motivated students,” he adds.
