Dartmouth: 2009 – 2010 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

dartmouth Hanover, NH — For the first time since 1993, Dartmouth finished outside the top eight last year. The Big Green finished the 2008-2009 season ranked tenth after losing to Brown 3-6 in the Kurtz Cup finals. With new head coach Hansi Wiens at the helm, the team hopes to return to the A Division and the top six.

Dartmouth’s 2009-2010 squad should be stronger and deeper than last year’s team. The Big Green are losing only player to graduation, number 2 Madeline Lurio, and will gain four starters. The new number 1, Valeria Wiens, comes to Dartmouth by way of Germany, where she played extensively. Milton grad Sarah Loucks, who should compete for a spot in the middle of the ladder, is the younger sister of Becca Loucks, a former captain of the Big Green. Loucks and Valeria Wiens will be joined by fellow first-years Rebecca Lau and Corey Shafer. Lau is currently ranked #9 U19 in Canada and should play in the top or middle three. Shafer is ranked #19 U19 in the US and should play in the middle of the ladder.

The team, which will be led by senior captains Libbey Brown and Elizabeth Weintraub, is looking forward to a rematch with Brown. The Big Green also have Cornell and Williams in their sights as they look to move up the rankings.

Hansi Wiens told DartmouthSports.com that he is delighted to be working with the Dartmouth players. “We have a great squash program and I am looking forward to working with so many bright, talented and highly motivated young men and women.”
