Cornell: 2009 – 2010 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

CornellIthaca, NY — Last season Cornell made their first appearance in the top eight since the 2001-2002 season, finishing sixth. The Big Red have no intention of leaving the A Division. Their goal is to maintain their ranking while closing the gap between them and the teams in the top five.

The fact that all but two of their top eleven players from last season are returning should help. Number 5 Alex Cornett and number 11 Alix Watson have graduated, but the rest of the squad will be back, with senior Liza Stokes and sophomore Lauren Sachvie as captains. Sachvie’s brother Chris, a senior at Cornell, is the captain of the men’s team.

The three newest members of the Big Red will add depth to its ladder. Jaime Laird of Western Canada High School in Alberta is expected to play in the middle of the ladder, and Penn Charter’s Lexi Glass and Choate’s Maggie Remsen should compete for spots at the bottom.

The Big Red open their season against their closest rival, Stanford. Cornell defeated Stanford twice last season, but the matches were competitive. “The final scores of these two encounters do not reflect the close, hard-fought matches throughout the lineup and we anticipate yet another battle,” says head coach Julee Devoy. The Big Red are also working towards improving the match results against top five teams. Where they won one or two individual matches against each team they want to improve to winning three or four.
