Stanford: 2012 – 2013 Women’s College Squash Season Preview

Stanford, CA — One of the most exciting — and amicable — rivalries to emerge in recent years is Stanford versus Cornell. The Big Red got the upper hand of the Cardinal in their last meeting, the consolation semis of the 2012 Howe Cup. Stanford will have a chance to counter that 4-5 loss with a win when they play Cornell in Ithaca on November 18. Stanford will be traveling with a number of new players. Sarah Haig (Greenwich Academy) and Cesca Fleischer (St. Andrew’s) are expected to play in the middle 3, and Carolyn Gillette (Lake Forest Academy), Caitlin Lu (Chinese International Academy), and Abby Giannuzzi (Winsor School) will jockey for spots in the bottom 3. Back home, the Stanford courts are freshly painted and sanded thanks to a $50,000 face-lift in the off season. The team will be hosting the opening rounds of the Net Suite Open in October. “It’s a great environment,” Mark Talbott says of Stanford. “We have the most fun and sun on the most beautiful campus.” College teams may want to check out the sunny scene in January and February, when Stanford will be hosting two round robins.
