Annapolis, MD — Last season Navy squash shone academically, earning the highest academic average of all 33 varsity sports at the Naval Academy. The team was presented with the Dean’s Award for having the highest cumulative quality point rating for the academic year, edging out the offshore sailing program and the men’s tennis team, who were close behind them.
Navy was busy on the courts as well, compiling a 23-10 season record and qualifying for the B Division in the Men’s National Team Championships. The Midshipmen won’t be slowing down this season.
“We are excited about our trip to Maine in January where we will play Bates, Colby and Bowdoin,” says head coach Craig Dawson. “Navy also looks forward to hosting St Lawrence in Annapolis, and we will travel to St Lawrence next season. The two Navy round robins Nov 4-6 and Nov 11-13 will be busy. As many as 16 different men’s and women’s teams will attend.”
Dartmouth, Yale, St. Lawrence, George Washington, and Penn will be big home matches for the Mids. “For the season our goal is to come together as a team and peak at Nationals so we can move up in the rankings,” Dawson explains. Helping the team work toward that goal is former Skillman Award winner and two-time All-American Casey Garwood, who returns to the Naval Academy as an assistant coach this season.
