This Weekend in College Squash: Navy–Western and Bard–Vassar Featured Matchups

The college squash season is still getting underway, but Saturday’s schedule already gives fans plenty to talk about. No. 4 Virginia hosts No. 7 Drexel in the season’s first top-10 matchup, while the Navy–Western men’s match and the Bard–Vassar women’s match each feature teams separated by a single spot in the rankings. In all, Week 2 brings nine men’s and five women’s matches, up from four matches on opening weekend.

Men’s Match of the Week | No. 14 Navy vs. No. 15 Western

Saturday at 11 a.m. ET

The preseason rankings put Navy and Western one spot apart. Last season’s scorecard tells a different story. Navy won 7–2, snapping a run of three straight Western wins in the series. That’s what makes Saturday’s rematch worth watching. Was last year the start of a shift, or is this matchup as tight as the rankings suggest?

They’ll meet on neutral courts at Denison, though Western will have had a look at those courts against the hosts on Friday night. Navy opens its season against St. Lawrence in Washington, D.C., on Thursday before heading to Ohio. Come Saturday morning, both teams will have a match under their belts and a chance to put the preseason order to the test.

Women’s Match of the Week | No. 29 Bard vs. No. 30 Vassar

Saturday at 3 p.m. ET at Vassar

Vassar had the last word at the Divisional Team Championships, beating Bard 5–4. The preseason rankings give Bard the edge by one spot. On Saturday, the two teams get to settle it on court again.

This will be their ninth meeting since 2024, with Vassar holding a 5–3 edge in the series. Bard has a chance to narrow that gap on Vassar’s home courts. Vassar has a chance to beat its higher-ranked neighbor and pick up right where it left off last season. If you’re picking a winner, which carries more weight: Bard’s spot in the rankings or Vassar’s track record head-to-head?

One to Watch | No. 7 Drexel at No. 4 Virginia

Saturday at 2:45 p.m. ET at Virginia

The season’s first meeting between two top-10 teams gives Drexel an early shot at a road win over a higher-ranked opponent. For Virginia, it’s a chance to defend its home courts against another top-10 program.

The men’s match caps a doubleheader that opens at 11:30 a.m. ET with the No. 4 Virginia women hosting No. 11 Drexel.

More Teams Are on the Way

While some teams will have three matches under their belts by Sunday, others are still counting down to their first. The Ivy League teams open their seasons next weekend, and NESCAC teams are putting in more practice time before they join the slate. After weeks of practice with and challenge matches against teammates, there’s a particular satisfaction in seeing another school’s colors on the other side of the glass.
