History Made on the Courts: Penn Men and Princeton Women Crowned Inaugural Ivy League Squash Tournament Champions

It was a weekend of high drama, dominant sweeps, and historic milestones, as the University of Pennsylvania men’s team and the Princeton University women’s team captured the titles at the inaugural Ivy League Squash Tournament.

The two top-ranked squads proved themselves on Sunday, with the Penn men pulling off a thrilling 5-4 comeback against rival Harvard, while the Princeton women defended their home courts with a commanding 5-1 victory over Penn.

Here is how the historic trophies were won.

Men’s Championship: Penn Digs Deep to Edge Out Harvard 5-4

In a championship match that will be remembered for years to come, the top-seeded Penn Quakers survived a massive scare from the #2 seed Harvard Crimson, rallying from an early deficit to claim the first ever title.

Harvard came out swinging, stunning the Quakers by taking three of the first four matches on the court. Denis Gilevskiy, Maddox Moxham, and Jacob Lin all secured critical wins for the Crimson, putting Penn’s hopes in serious jeopardy.

With their backs against the wall, the Red and Blue dug deep. The turning point came from freshman Alex Dartnell in the No. 4 spot. In a highly physical, back and forth battle against Harvard’s Christian Capella, Dartnell gutted out a 3-2 victory (12-10, 11-13, 11-6, 5-11, 11-9) to ignite a massive Quaker rally.

The momentum became contagious. Marwan Abdelsalam followed suit with a marathon 3-2 victory over Omar Azzam in the third position. Straight-set and four-game victories from Salman Khalil and Zane Patel, respectively, knotted the overall team score at four matches apiece.

The championship came down to the No. 8 position, where Penn junior Varun Chitturi faced off against Harvard’s Segev Rome. Chitturi jumped out to an early lead, taking the first two games and looking poised for a sweep. Rome, however, refused to go quietly, taking a nail-biting third game 12-10 to extend the match. Chitturi powered through the fourth game 11-5 to clinch the victory, 3-1, and secure the inaugural Ivy League title for Penn.

For his heroic efforts, freshman Alex Dartnell was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player. Dartnell, alongside Chitturi, Khalil, and Abdelsalam, were all named to the Ivy League All-Tournament team after posting flawless 2-0 records on the weekend.

Women’s Championship: No. 1 Princeton Caps Perfect Season with Inaugural Title

The women’s championship was a masterclass in dominance. The #1-ranked Princeton Tigers capped off a perfect Ivy League season by defeating the #2-ranked Penn Quakers 5-1 to hoist the tournament trophy.

Just a week after completing a regular-season sweep of the league, the Tigers showed no signs of slowing down. Princeton took control of the match early, winning two of the three matches in the first wave. While Penn’s Sohaila Ismail secured a quick victory at the No. 4 spot, Princeton’s star Zeina Zein made quick work of Malak Khafagy at the No. 1 position with a 3-0 sweep (13-11, 11-5, 11-3). Sonya Sasson mirrored that success at the No. 9 spot, sweeping her opponent to give the Tigers an early 2-1 advantage.

The second wave of matches left no doubt as to who the best team in the Ivy League was. Liyen Teoh extended Princeton’s lead to 3-1 following a dominant three-game sweep at the No. 7 position. Shortly after, Emma Trauber dispatched her opponent in four games at the No. 3 spot.

Moments later, the celebration was on. Sam Jaffe delivered the clinching victory at the No. 5 position, taking down Penn’s Alexandra Stoddard 3-1 (8-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-9) to seal the inaugural Ivy League Tournament Championship for the Tigers.

Zeina Zein was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player, recognizing her elite play at the top of the ladder. Jaffe, Teoh, and Trauber were also honored with selections to the All-Tournament Team

With the inaugural Ivy League trophy secured, both the Penn men and Princeton women will look to carry their championship momentum into the CSA Team Championships, which are scheduled to take place March 5-8 in Philadelphia.
