Hatfield, MA — In the final full weekend of the college squash regular season, many teams also had to face the weather as an additional opponent.
On Wednesday, Williams travelled north to face Dartmouth. The Big Green won the men’s match, 9-0, and the women’s match, 8-1. In Western Mass, Mount Holyoke lost to the Amherst women, 8-1. The Drexel men visited Princeton. The Dragons earned their first victory against Princeton on the Tigers’ home courts, 6-3. Wellesley hosted and lost to Tufts.
Harvard hosted Trinity. The women’s match featured top-ranked Harvard and 3rd-ranked Trinity. The Crimson continued their undefeated season with an 8-1 victory. The men’s match featured top-ranked Harvard and 2nd-ranked Trinity. The match went down to the wire, with Trinity emerging with a 5-4 victory.
Friday kicked off the final full weekend of the college squash regular season. St. Lawrence visited Amherst. The teams traded matches, with the Amherst women winning 8-1 and the St. Lawrence men winning 9-0. In Maine, Bowdoin and Colby also traded matches, with Bowdoin winning the women’s match, 5-4, and Colby winning the men’s match 6-3. George Washington hosted and lost to both Drexel squads. In Boston, MIT shutout the Tufts men.
In Ivy League action, Princeton visited Cornell. The Tigers defeated both Cornell squads. In New York City, Columbia and Penn traded matches. The Quaker women defeated Columbia, 9-0, while the Lions’ men earned a 6-3 victory. Harvard hosted and defeated the Brown men and women. The Yale men earned a 7-2 victory over Dartmouth, which appears to have solidified their placement in the Potter Cup. The Yale women shutout the Big Green.
For their final match of the regular season, MIT travelled to Amherst. MIT earned their first victory over Amherst since the 1988 – 1989 season and now sit one victory away from tying the program record for victories that was set last season. Also in Massachusetts, the Stanford women began their day losing to Harvard. They then travelled to New Hampshire and lost to Dartmouth, 1-8.
In New York, Hamilton defeated both Connecticut squads. The Hamilton and Connecticut men also defeated Bard. The Trinity men hosted defeated St. Lawrence, 8-1.
In Pennsylvania, George Washington visited Dickinson. The Colonials shutout the Dickinson men and women. At Haverford, the Fords defeated both Boston College squads. In the men’s match, Haverford won 9-0, while in the women’s match they won 5-4. In the afternoon, both Haverford squads lost to Bucknell.
Mount Holyoke hosted the annual Seven Sisters Championship on Saturday. Joining the Lyons at the event were Smith, Wellesley, and Vassar. After three straight Seven Sisters Championships, Wellesley’s reign ended this season. Mount Holyoke went 3-0 on the day to capture their ninth Seven Sisters crown. Wellesley defeated Vassar, 5-4, to finish second. Vassar defeated Smith to finish third.
On Sunday as winter storm Orson put a second foot of snow across much of New England, many matches were cancelled.
In Philadelphia, Drexel hosted and defeated the Dickinson men and women on senior day. In Maryland, Navy defeated Franklin & Marshall, 5-4. At Harvard, the Stanford women defeated Williams, 9-0.
The Ivy League season finished up on Sunday. Dartmouth hosted and defeated both Brown squads. Penn dispatched the Cornell men and women. The Princeton women shutout Columbia, while the Columbia men earned a 6-3 victory over the Tigers. Harvard clinched the men’s and women’s Ivy League titles on Sunday. The Crimson women shutout Yale, while the Harvard men escaped with a 5-4 victory over the Bulldogs. Both Harvard squads went undefeated in Ivy League play.
In club-vs.-club men’s matches, Bucknell defeated Boston College. Lehigh defeated Lafayette, Northwestern defeated Washington in St. Louis, Virginia defeated Richmond, and Vanderbilt defeated Sewanee.
In club-vs.-club women’s matches, Northeastern defeated Boston University.
Schools are reminded that to qualify for the National Team Championships, a minimum number of matches must be played at specific periods of the season:
- Varsity teams are required to play ten (10) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least 6 different opponents. Varsity teams should play the majority of their matches against other varsity schools.
- Club teams are required to play eight (8) matches against other CSA teams to enter team championships. At minimum, each team should have at least five (5) different opponents.
For a regular season match to officially count for ranking purposes, each team must have at least seven players. Matches with less than seven players per team will not count towards the required number of matches for entry into the National Team Championships.
