Hatfield, MA — For the week ending 1/8/2017, Middlebury’s Caroline Jahrling and Western Ontario’s Matthew Henderson have been named the women’s and men’s [hpow].

A [hpow] should have a significant impact on his or her team’s performance during the prior week and demonstrate sportsmanship. Coaches and Sports Information Directors may nominate players.

Caroline Jahrling (Middlebury College): When the 15th- and 16th-ranked teams meet, everyone expects the match to be close. Bates visited higher ranked Middlebury over the weekend. At the match at the #7 position, Middlebury’s Caroline Jahrling faced Bates’ Katie Bull. Jahrling, a junior, clinched the team match with one match to play with a five-game victory (8-11, 11-5, 9-11, 11-8, and 11-7). Through Sunday, Middlebury was 3-2 on the season.

Matthew Henderson (University of Western Ontario): In a rare home match, 18th-ranked Western Ontario hosted 14th-ranked Navy. With the two teams tied at 4-4, Western Ontario’s Matthew Henderson faced Navy’s Jack Herold at #1. After Henderson captured the first two games, Herold came back to tie the match at 2-2. In the end, Henderson prevailed in the fifth (16-14, 11-8, 4-11, 2-11, and 11-5) to capture the individual and team match for the Mustangs.
